Hazelwood
Midcentury ranch styles and new Hazelwood constructions
A variety of styles make up the Hazelwood neighborhood. Midcentury bungalows and ranch-style homes in cheerful colors—many built during the 1950s—line the neighborhood’s residential streets, costing between $350,000 and $475,000. Though it’s one of Portland’s older neighborhoods, new, Craftsman-inspired constructions with tuck-under garages common to the Pacific Northwest periodically spring up where old houses once stood. While most houses in the neighborhood come with around three bedrooms, larger ranch-style homes and split levels with more bedrooms fetch between $540,000 and $580,000, often coming on lots with around half of an acre. Two- and three-bedroom townhouses range from $235,000 to $335,000, while more than half of Hazelwood residents rent their homes.Free 72-ounce steaks for Sayler’s challenge winners
Two major shopping centers and an emergency room border Interstate 205, Hazelwood’s western boundary, and several chain restaurants are sprinkled throughout the neighborhood. Sayler’s Old Country Kitchen is a community mainstay, having opened its doors in 1946. Every meal includes bread, a salad, a relish tray, side dishes and ice cream. The restaurant is also home to the 72oz. Steak Challenge, which awards a free meal to contestants who successfully down?two celery sticks, two carrot sticks, two olives, two dill pickles and an entire steak, all within an hour.Jet Black Coffee Company serves espresso in a modern, dark interior with light wood finishings and lots of greenery next to a vegan grocery store. Fred Meyer, Target and two WinCo Food stores provide the essentials, while The Home Depot, Ross Dress for Less and Kohl’s are also nearby. There are also local second-hand shopping opportunities close by. “There are a lot of garage sales and excellent thrift stores out here, so that keeps me really happy,” Faux says. “There are five or six thrift stores within a mile radius [of Jet Black Coffee Company.]”
Golf at Glendoveer and play at Gateway Discovery Park
In addition to several neighborhood parks, Hazelwood offers other outdoor recreation and physical activities. For a daily drop-in rate of less than $7, locals can access the fitness center, indoor basketball court and indoor lap and leisure pools at the East Portland Community Center in Mill Park. The center buzzes with children after school hours on their way to a variety of organized activities. When Portland’s dry season begins, golf enthusiasts make their way to one of Glendoveer Golf & Tennis’ two 18-hole courses.Ventura Park is scattered with locals during the day—parents watch their little ones scramble play structures that look like modern art installations and dog owners take their canines out for a walk. The park also has a sandy area for biking and BMX riding, and it’s one of the venues of the East Portland Summer Arts Festival, which brings live music and other entertainment to the city. Gateway Discovery Park is another modern green space, its expansive turf anchored by playful red spheres for children to climb on. In addition to playground equipment, the park also includes a sand pit, a skate spot and a splash pad.
Proximity to Interstates 205 and 84
One of Hazelwood’s highlights is its convenience and easy access to downtown. Nestled against the east side of Interstate 205, it’s only a few miles south of Interstate 84, which residents can use to reach downtown Portland and the city’s west side. Burnside Street also runs across the Willamette River into downtown Portland, and multiple public bus routes connect the neighborhood to the rest of the city. Both the TriMet MAX Light Rail blue and green lines run through the area, traveling to Gresham, Hillsboro, Beaverton and downtown Portland.Career preparation at David Douglas High School
Hazelwood is zoned for several elementary schools, including Cherry Park Elementary School, which receives an A-minus grade from Niche. Students may continue their education at Floyd Light Middle School before potentially graduating from David Douglas High School, both of which earn B-plus grades. The high school prepares students for the future with an extensive career center page—complete with links to scholarship applications, financial aid resources and a resume template—as well as 11 Advanced Placement courses and a variety of career technical education programs.
