Big retailers and modern housing in suburban Hazelwood
Immediately to the east of Interstate 205 lies the neighborhood of Hazelwood, a balance of quiet residential streets with modern, one-level homes and busier commercial complexes with a mix of big-name retailers and local businesses. “I think it was one of the original Portland urban growth neighborhoods, so there’s a lot of developments with a suburban feel,” says Tai Faux, a real estate broker with Think Real Estate, who lives near the neighborhood herself. “And a lot of really awesome midcentury houses, which is what I love.” Residential streets surround neighborhood green spaces, while the interstate and two TriMet MAX Light Rail lines make for an easy trip downtown.

Midcentury ranch styles and new Hazelwood constructions
A variety of styles make up the Hazelwood neighborhood. Midcentury bungalows and ranch-style homes in cheerful colors—many built during the 1950s—line the neighborhood’s residential streets, costing between $350,000 and $475,000. Though it’s one of Portland’s older neighborhoods, new, Craftsman-inspired constructions with tuck-under garages common to the Pacific Northwest periodically spring up where old houses once stood. While most houses in the neighborhood come with around three bedrooms, larger ranch-style homes and split levels with more bedrooms fetch between $540,000 and $580,000, often coming on lots with around half of an acre. Two- and three-bedroom townhouses range from $235,000 to $335,000, while more than half of Hazelwood residents rent their homes.

The park also has a sandy area for biking and BMX riding, and it’s one of the venues of the East Portland Summer Arts Festival, which brings live music and other entertainment to the city. Gateway Discovery Park is another modern green space, its expansive turf anchored by playful red spheres for children to climb on.
