A walkable, artsy neighborhood in northern Portland
King is a residential neighborhood that offers residents access to Portland's vibrant arts and culture scene. Located on the west end of Portland's renowned Alberta Arts District, the King neighborhood is part residential community, part commercial district. "I've lived over 25 years in a neighboring neighborhood on a street that bisects it," says Scott Wilson, a Realtor with RE/MAX Equity Group, who's been selling homes in Portland since 1996. "It's a great urban residential neighborhood alternative where you get some houses, green spaces, and parks to walk to. It's one of those nice residential, walkable areas." It also is the gateway to the Alberta Arts District, which has a variety of shops, galleries, and local food options, meaning things can get a bit busy here.
Craftsman homes made with local timber
Green and woodsy, much of King is blanketed by trees that harken back to the neighborhood's earlier years. "It's got a lot of great old trees, elms, horse chestnuts," Wilson says. As with most areas in central Portland, homes were built mainly in the first decades of the 20th century, with a few more recently built homes scattered throughout the neighborhood. "You're going back more toward the Arts and Crafts period with a lot of bungalows and four squares," Wilson says. "They're hundred-year-old timepieces. They're well-constructed and took advantage of our thriving timber industry." The median price for a single-family home is around $560,000. Condos and townhomes can range from $300,000 to $400,000. Most houses sell in the $500,000 to $750,000 range, with some selling for $900,000 and beyond.

Ample grocery stores and the King Farmers Market
The neighborhood's namesake, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, is home to most of King's shopping and dining options, including a variety of locally-owned stores like Modern Domestic, a sewing and quilting workshop, and Five Stride Skate Shop, a quad roller skate store. Local restaurants range from popular pork purveyor Pig Patas Tacos to Ethiopian eatery Aberus, where you'll find some of the best kitfo and coffee in town. Beer lovers can sample the many local breweries. At the same time, those looking for a cozier experience can visit Keys Lounge, which offers craft cocktails and curated playlists in a converted locksmith shop. Amateur chefs will appreciate the neighborhood's variety of grocery options, from major supermarkets to organic grocers to specialty markets. There's also the King Farmers Market. "If you're an herbivore or a vegan, that farmer's market is a must-see," Wilson says. And lest carnivores fret, Cason's Fine Meats, a full-service butcher shop, is available. "We're so used to being in a grocery store environment. To go to a local butcher shop is a nice change of pace. It has a nice neighborhood feel compared to going to a big grocery," Wilson says.

Alberta Arts District is where King comes alive
At the center of the neighborhood, King Boulevard intersects with Alberta Street and the Alberta Arts District, a 2-mile stretch of art galleries, boutiques, and event spaces, and one of the best window-shopping streets in all of Portland. It's home to the Alberta Street Fair and one of the best places in north Portland to find live entertainment, like the Portland Playhouse and the music venue Alberta Abbey. Nightlife in the area is plentiful also. Last Thursdays is an event where the neighborhood opens galleries on the last Thursday of each month. "During the summers, they shut down the street from 15th to about 30th," Wilson says.

MLK Elementary offers Mandarin program
Schools in the area are part of the Niche B-rated Portland Public Schools system, including local Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, which offers a Mandarin Dual Immersion program and some activity-focused after-school programs. Niche gives the school a grade of C. From there, students may go on to the B-minus Harriet Tubman Middle School. Teens can enroll at Jefferson High School, which is graded B-minus and located just outside the neighborhood, or Grant High School, which is rated A-minus but located a bit farther away in the Grant Park neighborhood.

Irving and Peninsula parks for gardens and play
Local green space is limited. However, there are a couple of well-appointed city parks along the neighborhood's edges, including Irving Park and the famous rose gardens of Peninsula Park. The extensive hiking and biking trails of West Portland are only a few minutes away by car. "Irving Park has pickleball courts and an area for basketball ballfields. It's a pretty large park. Nearby Peninsula Park is a walkable alternative. It's one of my favorite parks in the city," Wilson says.
About 4 miles to downtown Portland
As for getting around the neighborhood, King has a mix of automobile and bike traffic, which can become slightly congested during peak commuting hours. Buses operate on Northeast Martin Luther King Boulevard. Both the airport and downtown Portland are about 4 miles away.
