Mt Tabor
Neighborhood in Portland, Oregon
Multnomah County 97215

Quiet living is common here
Mt. Tabor is largely residential outside of the park. Homes in the area, like the park, date back to the early 20th century, but variety isn’t hard to find — one can spot mid- to late-century homes here, too, as well as some built after the turn of the century. There are still some new houses and townhomes going up in spots. “There is new construction because a lot of our lot sizes are very generous so people have been able to put in new houses on houses that had double lots,” Wiens says. Many of the homes in Mt. Tabor have Cape Cod and Craftsman bungalow styling. Most streets are organized similarly: lined with lush trees, bushes, and sidewalks. Mt. Tabor Park is in reasonably walkable proximity to virtually the entire neighborhood, and the area is known in part for its tranquil atmosphere. “It tends to be more of a respite from the main areas of downtown.” Options in the neighborhood start in the $400,000s and top out at around $2 million for the more expansive estates, pushing 6,000 and 7,000 square feet.Neighborhood park offers top-notch views
The neighborhood’s Mt. Tabor Park stretches 176 acres in total and is a popular spot for hikers, runners, and walkers. The facility also includes a playground, an off-leash area for dogs, basketball and volleyball courts, and more. The park is also a great spot to watch the sunset on a summer evening, Wiens says. It was established as a park in the early 1900s and is now on the National Register of Historic Places.Schools are well-regarded
Kids in Mt. Tabor can attend schools in the Portland Public Schools system, which has a B overall rating on Niche. A student’s specific path can vary depending on where exactly they live, but a possible track is to start at the A-minus-rated Glencoe Elementary, a school that gives its students social-emotional learning lessons each day, which include coping strategies and mindfulness practice. Then, students may move on to the B-plus-rated Mt. Tabor Middle, which has dual-immersion programs in Spanish and Japanese. The B-plus-rated Franklin High, which has its own culinary arts program, is next.Mr. Tabor is also home to Warner Pacific University and Western Seminary, a pair of higher-education institutions. Warner Pacific’s roughly 700 students contribute tens of thousands of community service hours to the city every school year.
Roll in style in Mt. Tabor
The hilly terrain of Mt. Tabor Park makes for an apt setting for an annual tradition in the PDX Adult Soapbox Derby, held on the third Saturday in August. The derby features more than 40 creatively decorated cars powered by gravity. “It is such a fun event,” Wiens says. “People come from all over the city to attend it. When we first moved here 22 years ago it was a small event and now it’s really a highlight.”Catch a ride in Mt. Tabor with TriMet
Mt. Tabor features several stops in the TriMet bus system. TriMet includes more than 80 different lines, across the Portland metro area. And though Mt. Tabor is outside the downtown sphere, drivers can quickly hop on Interstate 84 for trips to downtown, just about 6 miles away.Amenities are easy to find
Stretches like Burnside Street, Belmont Street, Hawthorne Boulevard and Division Street cut through Mt. Tabor and provide residents with quick access to multiple restaurants and other businesses, within walking distance. One of the hotspot neighborhood restaurants on Belmont is Coquine, serving up modern American fare with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. Those looking for something more casual can stop at Blind Onion Pizza & Pub down the street — perhaps try their Von Freight Train pizza, with red sauce, mozzarella, bacon, red onions, mushroom and sausage. Mt. Tabor even has a full-fledged supermarket, QFC, located on Burnside Street.
