Neighborhood mural depicts “The Leaders of East Portland”
At the corner of one of the busiest intersections of Portland’s Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood, four women look optimistically toward the future in a colorful mural commissioned by the Midway Business Association. Titled the “Leaders of East Portland,” each woman represents a different culture, selected for her unique contributions to the community. ”I've lived here for a while, and I've seen it grow,” Midway District Manager Laura Martinez says about the neighborhood as a whole. “This is why we launched the Arts Midway—it was a way for us to not only beautify the space but also to share a culture.” Along with a diverse and growing small business community, Powellhurst-Gilbert has a mix of midcentury homes and new constructions near several natural areas.

New constructions spring up between midcentury homes
Most single-family houses in the neighborhood were built between the 1940s and the 1970s; a colorful array of bungalows and ranch-style homes line the neighborhood's quiet residential streets. Shrubs burst with colorful blooms between quaint homes and their adjacent sidewalks, nourished by Portland’s notoriously generous rainfall. Newer construction from the 2000s can also be found throughout the area. “Portland controls its urban growth boundary, so you get a lot of fill-in lots,” says Bradley Wulf, a principal broker with Atlas North Real Estate Group. “So, there'll be a lot of homes built in the 1960s and ‘70s out there, and then, boom, you'll have a brand-new house.” These homes range from $370,000 to $500,000, while homes on larger lots—a quarter of an acre or more—can cost between $550,000 and $650,000.
Two- and three-bedroom townhouses cost between $250,000 and $375,000, while one- and two-bedroom condos range from $170,000 to $190,000. Multiple apartment complexes house the neighborhood’s renters, who make up roughly half of the population.

Although it’s since been sealed off, hikers can still see the top of the concrete structure as they climb trails sprinkled with periwinkle flowers. The Powell Butte Nature Park is another popular hiking area just east of the neighborhood. Hiking trails equipped for mountain bikers and equestrians wind up an extinct cinder cone volcano to reveal views of a snowy Mount Hood.
Across Southeast Foster Road, the Leach Botanical Garden—once a private residence—is one of East Portland's underrated attractions. Programming includes volunteer- and staff-led tours, equinox events, as well as partnerships with local schools and retirement communities. Signage in English, Russian and Chinese identifies the various flora that make up the tree walk, riparian area and pollinator garden.
