Small-town charm along the Willamette and Columbia Rivers
Though located at the northern tip of Portland, St. Johns maintains a small-town atmosphere that feels separated from the city’s hustle and bustle. The community appears to cover a lot of land, but more than half of St. Johns encompasses industrial buildings, including distribution centers for Amazon and Subaru. Despite its quiet charm and industrial portion, the neighborhood provides an easy path to Portland’s top attractions. “I’m always shocked by the city, and I’ve been here 13 years. There are Thorns games, Timbers games, the zoo—and everything is just within a really convenient ride,” explains Jennifer Parral of Oregon First, an agent living and working in the Portland area for over a decade.

Residents can sip coffee in a fantasy-like setting at Wonderwood Springs or grab a bite of Mexican cuisine at Tienda Santa Cruz. For the essentials, locals can choose between Safeway, Fred Meyer and Grocery Outlet without veering off the commercial strip. Entertainment can also be found close by, with McMenamins St. Johns Theater and Pub playing second-run films at the corner of North Richmond Ave, and St. Johns Twin Cinemas playing the latest films less than half a mile northwest.

Architecture of all shapes and sizes in North Portland
Single-family homes comprise most of St. Johns, though a few condos can also be found throughout the community. Because of the neighborhood’s continued growth since it was first settled in the 1850s, the architecture varies depending on the year it was built. Many homes from the early 1900s feature cottage-style architecture, while more recent builds include Craftsman, Cape Cod, and modern home styles. Though houses sit on compact lots, some properties have private driveways and single-car garages. Condo units with one or two bedrooms range from $210,000 to $250,000 and often include less than 800 square feet. Two-bedroom single-family homes start around $300,000, and four-bedroom houses start closer to $550,000. Newly constructed homes with over 3,500 square feet can exceed $1 million.

Green spaces on either side of the St. Johns Bridge
Surrounded by parks and preserved land, St. Johns ensures walkability to green spaces. Pier Park acts as a border between the neighborhood’s industrial area and allows residents to work on their kickflips at the skate park or make a splash in the pool. For views of wildlife, locals venture to Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area, which encompasses a vast portion of northeastern St. Johns. Though not part of the neighborhood, Forest Park borders to the west, bringing over 5,000 acres of hiking and biking trails across St. Johns Bridge.

Community events and activities in downtown Portland
A community-oriented neighborhood dedicated to maintaining its character, St. Johns keeps activities close at hand—but also ensures an easy ride to popular events downtown. The neighborhood holds an annual parade, hosts a farmers market from May to October and offers weekly activities at the community center. Of course, with downtown less than 8 miles away, residents can also swing by a concert or enjoy annual festivals by car in minutes. “The way everything is set up, you can easily park and get in your seat for a concert,” Parral says.

Highly rated district in Multnomah County
Part of Portland Public Schools, the neighborhood benefits from the 3rd-best district in Multnomah County, according to Niche. Students begin at James John Elementary, which earns a C-plus grade, and transition to George Middle School, a C-graded school. From here, students attend Roosevelt High, a C-plus school with a Step Up program that pairs students with a mentor who provides support and leadership training. No matter which school students attend, each building is housed within St. Johns, making it easy for students to walk to class.

I have been living in St. Johns for 3 years. It is a wonderful part of town and includes everything you need! It is getting expensive though, and I'm sure I will be priced out pretty soon!

Great location, no need to go outside of St. Johns to get all your needs. It has great bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and food trucks. Good community with a lot of diversity, something that most of Portland lacks. Overall good place to live, just be sure to lock your car and don't ever leave anything of value in there. Unfortunately it is still Portland it still has its Portland things such as homelessness and drug use, so do yourself a favor and don't set yourself up for a broken window and a bad morning.

St John's is going though gentrification which is a terrible things for the locals. I moved up here just over a year ago and unfortunately have had a bad experience. My car was stolen within the month of moving and there is a great amount of violence. But, St John's is beautiful and also has a lot of walking availability and sights.
