Tight-knit Sumner offers turn-of-the-20th century bungalows and cottages
Sumner is a quiet, urban East Portland community between the I-84/I-205 interchange and Portland International Airport. Its residential streets are primarily located south of Highway 308, while the northern edge of Sumner hosts light industrial and commercial businesses. Sumner streets are lined with small homes and landscaped yards with flowering cherry trees and vegetable gardens. Home to about 3,000 residents, Sumner was initially developed in the early 1900s and today, bungalows and cottages from the 1920s and 30s occasionally come to market. Buyers will also find mid-century ranch-style homes and a few 21st-century New Traditional homes. While Sumner is predominantly a residential neighborhood, homes take center stage. They’re often painted bright colors and sometimes feature small front porches with seating and decoration. Neighbors maintain bulletin boards and Little Libraries, fostering a sense of community.
According to Bryce Rosenbaum, Realtor with Harcourts Real Estate Network Group, a Portland native and a real estate agent for more than six years, “Many residents in Sumner have lived here for a long time – some for 20 or 30 years – and they love it. It’s easy to walk to nearby shopping and restaurants and it’s close to the Grottoes and area parks. What buyers like are the mid-century homes. They’re well-maintained, competitively priced, and each is distinct from the next, giving the neighborhood its own personality.”
