University Park offers a small-town feel in Portland
University Park gets its name from the University of Portland, which resides atop Waud Bluff in the neighborhood. “I like living here,” says Jonathan Miller, owner of Hearth Realty Group, who has lived in the Portland neighborhood for 10 years. “It feels like a small town.” Families send their children to Portland Public Schools, which earn a B from Niche, and can explore one of the several parks in the neighborhood. North Lombard Street, which runs along the top of the neighborhood, is lined with local shops and eateries for people to visit, and residents attend events hosted throughout the city. “If you’re looking to plug into an area with great schools, great parks and is in a quiet part of the city, this is the place,” Miller says.

University of Portland and Portland Public Schools
The University of Portland is a Catholic liberal arts institution that offers over 40 undergraduate and 20 graduate programs. Miller, who is also a property manager, says that students will often rent a house in the neighborhood when they are ready to move off campus. “Neighbors and students coexist well,” he says.
The younger students in the neighborhood attend Portland Public Schools, completing kindergarten through eighth grade at Astor Elementary, which earns a B from Niche. “My kids have attended there for nine years,” Miller says. “The principal is great, and it has super energetic and nice teachers.” Roosevelt High School, which receives a C-plus, partners with the nearby McDaniel High School to host the Portland International Scholars Academy (PISA), designed for students who moved to the U.S. within two years. PISA students participate in an intensive English development program that spans a range of subjects, including math, science and social studies.

Colorful residential streets in University Park
A line of trees separates the sidewalks from the car-filled streets of University Park. Lawns are decorated with bushes, trees and flowers that complement the neighborhood’s colorful properties. Most residents, including Miller, live in what he describes as a “functional” Cape Cod, which may not have dormer windows but maintains the classic Cape Cod shape. Many other styles are scattered throughout the neighborhood, including Foursquare and Arts and Crafts homes. “A lot of these houses were built post-World War II,” Miller says, although there are also several homes built in the early 1900s. Prices for a single-family tend to cost between $415,000 and $650,000.

Stores and restaurants along North Lombard Street
An array of stores and restaurants line North Lombard Street, including University Park’s New Seasons Market. “It’s definitely a highlight of the neighborhood,” Miller says. This Portland grocery chain prides itself on stocking locally sourced products. Any groceries residents cannot find can be bought at Fred Meyer, within 1 mile of the park. Chill N Fill has made a name for itself as a neighborhood hangout, hosting special events from comedy to trivia. “There’s a great wine and cider selection,” Miller says. Patrons can fill their growlers up with one of more than 30 wines, beers, ciders and kombuchas and grab a bite from a food cart. Lowe’s is about a 4-mile drive, while Target is about 5 miles away.

University Park residents attend Portland events
Portland hosts several events throughout the year, including the Portland Rose Festival, a summer celebration that started in 1907. Its programming starts with CityFair, which spans three weekends in May and June and features carnival rides and live entertainment. The festival ends with the Grand Floral Parade. Locals can also visit one of Portland’s markets, including the Kenton Farmers Market, held every Wednesday evening from June to September.
Columbia Park blends nature and recreation
There are several public parks in the neighborhood. “Columbia Park is the crown jewel,” Miller says. This park features a softball field, tennis court, an accessible playground and a nature patch residents can walk through. This forest is part of the Portland Parks and Recreation department’s initiative to support the area’s wildlife and bring more nature into the surrounding communities. Other neighborhood parks include McKenna Park, with a soccer field and basketball court, and Portsmouth Park.

Locals rely on bikes, cars and public transit
The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon, locally known as TriMet, offers bus stops along the major roads of University Park, making it easy for residents to get around the city. Many people also bike or drive themselves. Portland International Airport is about 9 miles away, and the nearest emergency room is at the Legacy Emanual Medical Center, about 5 miles away.

Trains carry supplies to Swan Island from University Park
Swan Island Industrial Park is about a 5-mile drive from University Park. Formerly a shipyard during World War II, the island is home to distribution centers, warehouses and manufacturing plants. Miller says there is not much disruption, visibly or audibly, besides trains running through the neighborhood. “We do hear them,” Miller says.
