Alberta Arts District connects Vernon to surrounding area
While Vernon is primarily residential, this North Portland neighborhood has made a name for itself as part of the Alberta Arts District. “There is a really tight community of artists,” says Happy Abernethy, lead assistant manager at the art supply store Collage, who has worked in the area for two years. This creative spirit is evident along Alberta Street, from murals such as the Alberta Art Wall and Community Cycling Center to sculptures such as “The Noble Architect.” The Alberta Street Black Heritage Markers are five art installations throughout the district that celebrate the neighborhood’s Black heritage through historical figures and moments. They include Paul Knauls, founder of the Cotton Club music venue, which hosted Etta James and Sammy Davis Jr. during its tenure. Vernon is served by Portland Public Schools, which receives a B from Niche.

Locally owned businesses along Alberta Street
As part of the Alberta Arts District, residents shop at many independently owned-businesses. “Everyone around here has a lot of local support,” Abernethy says. “I see that especially working at Collage and asking for donations, people really show out.” Besides selling a wide selection of arts and crafts supplies, Collage collects donations for a local nonprofit serving people of color or the LGBTQ+ community each month. Other stores include Passenger Seat Records and Close Knit, a yarn shop, while the thrift store Dime and Penny is farther into the neighborhood. Alberta Street is also home to several other businesses, including yoga studios, hair salons and spas. Abernethy recommends the Tin Can Garden Shed Cafe, known for its breakfast dishes, although that is only one of the restaurants available. Gumba serves Italian food, while Kabba’s Kitchen specializes in African dishes. People can get groceries from Alberta Cooperative Groceries or Safeway, while Home Depot is about 7 miles away and Walmart is about a 10-mile drive.

Last Thursday celebrates the community’s businesses
From June to August, Alberta Street closes, and businesses open for Last Thursday, a community-centered event that showcases locally made art. Galleries host their openings while performance venues and bars play live music, and independent creatives set up booths to display and sell their work. “It’s a free event that anyone can vend at,” Abernethy says. The only exception is that the event requests food vendors so that people visit the neighborhood restaurants. Other art markets are held throughout the year, including the Alberta Street Market for Diversity and Inclusion and the Fall Market.

Vernon streets filled with a variety of colorful homes
With sidewalks lining the residential streets of Vernon, residents can walk to the arts district. They pass green lawns with bushes, trees and flowers that offer as much variety as the homes they decorate. Colorful bungalows and Arts and Crafts sit among Foursquares and houses with sloping roofs and Tudor influences. Most of these properties were built in the early to mid-20th century, with prices typically falling between $350,000 and $650,000. Some new construction, often with postmodern influences, can be found throughout the neighborhood and can cost upwards of $750,000.

Alberta Park blends recreation and nature
Alberta Park sits on about 16 acres at the top of the neighborhood. “It’s super nice to go when it’s nice out, and there’s a park for the kiddos,” Abernethy says. Besides a playground, children can play on the basketball courts and tennis courts. Locals can walk their dogs along the park’s trail or take them to the off-leash area, where they can run around and socialize. The Alberta Park Nature Patch, which was the pilot for the Ecologically Sustainable Landscapes Initiative, uses native plants to improve its ecosystem.
