Homes and riverside trails north of Portland’s downtown
Stretching north to the jogging trails along Columbia River and south to Gilsan Street, Wilkes is a northern Portland neighborhood with access to downtown via Interstate 84. “Wilkes is a very quiet neighborhood with easy access to downtown Portland,” says area Realtor Patrick Gourley of Windermere Realty Trust. “You can also see views of Mount Hood in the distance from virtually all around Wilkes.” Mid-century modern estates and single-story ranch homes sit south of Sandy Boulevard. Neighborhood students study within the Reynolds School District, rated an overall C-minus on Niche. One of Wilkes's several houses of worship, the Nam-Quang Temple of the New Vietnamese Buddhist Order is located on Northeast 148th Avenue and has elaborate gardens and a koi pond.
Pacific Northwest-style mid-century modern homes
The southern portion of Wilkes, below Northeast Sandy Boulevard, is where you’ll find the area’s wide selection of homes. Condos, townhomes, and single-family lots offer a wide selection of homes for families of many lifestyles. Classic Pacific Northwest homes embrace mid-century modern aesthetics with wooden siding and sloped roof eaves. Glenwood Place and Windsor Place condos fall within the Summerplace Homeowners’ Association for residents 55+ and can be found at prices between $250,000 and $400,000. In tidy subdivisions, both in and outside of Summerplace, residences with three-car garages can cost between $650,000 and $800,000 dollars. Single-story ranch homes sit back from the road and are often priced between $450,000 and $500,000 dollars.

Craft beer selections at Von Ebert Brewing
Though the area is primarily residential south of the industrial district, a few restaurants and shops can be found along Sandy Boulevard. The Von Ebert Brewing location next to Glendoveer Golf Course “is probably the most popular restaurant around here,” Gourley says, what with their hand-tossed pizzas and extensive beer list. “Though Grant’s Philly Cheesesteaks is pretty popular around here, too.” Just north of Wilkes Park, Grant’s Philly Cheesesteak is open every day but Saturday, with Philadelphia-style sandwiches and homemade potato chips. For everyday errands, stores like WinCo Foods, Walgreens, and Harbor Freight Tools are all located on 122nd Avenue near the San Rafael Shopping Center.

Getting around Wilkes and commuting to Portland
Because Wilkes’ northern edge has direct access to Interstate 84, it is possible to reach the many restaurants, museums, and nightlife in downtown Portland, just 14 miles away. Portland International Airport (PDX) is about 5 miles away via Airport Way for those taking a vacation out of town. The Adventist Health Portland hospital is about 6 miles southwest via 148th Avenue for emergencies or checkups.
Industrial warehouses north of Sandy Boulevard
Most homes end at Sandy Boulevard, and beyond are office complexes, industrial buildings and wholesale warehouses that hug the riverside. Though there are running and walking paths along the river, those large industries take up most of the south-facing views from the river’s edge. However, to the north, locals can get an unobstructed view of Government Island.
