Woodstock

Eclectic homes create a cozy atmosphere
The land that makes up Woodstock was platted in 1889, and the neighborhood took its name from the title of a Sir Walter Scott novel, as was a trend in the area at the time. Some homes in the neighborhood date back to the turn of the 20th century, and others span the timeline to the 21st century. A common thread is that many of Woodstock’s homes assume Craftsman styling, in single- and multi-story configurations. There are some modern condos and townhomes scattered around Woodstock, too. Some of the condos in the neighborhood come with price tags that start in the mid-$300,000s Single-family homes here that may need work can start in the mid-$300,000s, too, and prices can climb to more than $1 million for an updated or relatively new house that’s pushing 3,000 square feet.Woodstock is well-rounded
The primary commercial thoroughfare to visit in the neighborhood is Woodstock Boulevard. It’s the spot to meet friends for a drink, sit down for a meal, grab a cup of coffee, or pick up groceries. Otto’s Sausage Kitchen is a staple here, featured on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Open since the 1920s, Otto’s Sausage Kitchen has a menu packed with specialty sandwiches and a grill cooking up sausages, pork links and more. It’s a neighborhood staple, says Berkvam, owner of Berkvam WindWorks, a Woodstock-based instrument repair shop. One of the nearby places to grab a drink is Proper Pint Taproom, a pub with regular events — like a chili cook-off — whose quirks include a special phone line programmed to order pizza, from Bridge City Pizza just down the street. Locals can satiate their sweet tooth at Cloud City Ice Cream, which specializes in small-batch, handmade flavors like sea salt cookie dough and caramelized banana. Woodstock Boulevard has Safeway and New Seasons Market grocery stores, too.
Regular opportunities to come together
From spring to summer, Woodstock residents can congregate on Woodstock Boulevard to visit the neighborhood’s farmers market. Woodstock Farmers Market is held every Sunday from June to October and, in addition to more than three dozen vendors, features live music and activities for kids. “A lot of the vendors sell out of stuff,” Berkvam says. “It’s really taken off.”Also, the Woodstock Community Center is located just off Woodstock Boulevard and is the site of a range of adult and youth programming, like Tae Kwon Do, art classes, dance instruction and fitness classes. The community center hosts the Woodstock Neighborhood Association’s monthly meetings as well, on the first Wednesday of each month.
Area schools are well-regarded
The public schools kids around Woodstock can attend vary depending on where they live, but most are well-rated. The Portland Public Schools district has a B overall rating on Niche and students in Woodstock can start at either the A-minus-rated Woodstock Elementary or B-rated Lewis Elementary. Woodstock offers a Mandarin Immersion program and Lewis’ art program includes instrumental music instruction. Neighborhood students can move on to the B-plus-rated Sellwood Middle or B-minus-rated Lane Middle next. Sellwood’s elective classes range from marimba to ceramics, and Lane has a Russian Immersion program. Franklin or Cleveland High follows, schools with B-plus grades and that both count culinary arts programs among their course offerings.Namesake park is a gem
A nice afternoon in the area could be spent taking a stroll to Woodstock Park, which is planted in the heart of the neighborhood. The tucked-away 14-acre tract of greenspace includes athletics fields, an off-leash area for dogs and a horseshoe pit. “There aren’t a lot of off-leash dog parks in Portland, so people will drive their car with their dogs just to let them run around there,” Berkvam says.Move around with TriMet
Woodstock includes multiple stops in the TriMet bus network. TriMet crisscross the Portland metro area with more than 80 bus lines. Also, drivers in Woodstock can quickly hop on Oregon Route 99 to head north to Downtown Portland, a trip of about a half-dozen miles.
