Port Norfolk’s historic roots
At the northern end of Portsmouth, overlooking the Elizabeth River, stands Port Norfolk. The historic neighborhood was initially developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to house railroad and shipping facility workers commuting to the nearby marine terminals. Today, residential streets stretching from the ports to Midtown Portsmouth feature architectural styles such as Victorian, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival. Large front and wraparound porches look out over well-maintained flowerbeds and lawns with established trees. “It’s a pretty area and relatively quiet. People seem to enjoy its historic nature,” says Craig Boyer, who is a longtime local and has been serving the Hampton Roads region as a Realtor and investment agent at All/Pros Realty Inc. for over 14 years.
The median year a home in Port Norfolk was built is 1943.

Port Norfolk historic homes
“The area is undergoing a lot of revitalization,” Boyer says. “Some of Port Norfolk is part of the historic district, though, and there are specific guidelines for how homes can be renovated.” The median range is around $250,000, and buyers may find a well-maintained, three-bedroom ranch or Cape Cod-style at this price point. A fully restored, three-bedroom Victorian-era house may list for closer to $350,000. “People can get a lot more for their money in Port Norfolk. A place here will cost about $100,000 to $150,000 less than its equivalent in Chesapeake or Virginia Beach,” Boyer says.
