Primarily built in the first half of the 20th century, a mix of attached row houses and single-family homes sit along the winding hillsides of Mount Hope. Occasionally one will see properties under $50,000 selling in as-is condition. Houses that are farther from downtown have larger lots compared to those closer to the city center, and yard spaces can be between quarter-acre to half-acre with driveways. Properties are also often perched above ground level, and there are usually stairs that connect the front door or the front porch to the sidewalks. Street parking is common in areas closer to downtown, and the city has created the Flight Blight Task Force to address the safety hazards of houses that have fallen into disrepair.Pottsville Area School District

As a mining community since the 1700s, Pottsville today still has some active strip mine sites outside the city limits. Potential effects of coal mining can include acid mine drainage from abandoned mines, which typically leads to local groundwater and soil contamination. Coal mine dust may also pose air pollution and health risks to miners. In 2023, the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement has been giving funding to Pottsville and the county to support water treatment projects that help restore the local streams to health.
