Residential living with proximity to Pottsville's downtown and public schools

Sitting adjacent to downtown, Mount Hope is a neighborhood in Pottsville home to the city’s zoned elementary school, John S. Clarke Elementary Center. With the local public middle and high school also close by and within walking distance, Mount Hope has become a convenient residential pocket for families living in the city. The community is also near the Schuylkill YMCA and the local recreation center, as well as restaurants and shops downtown. “When people talk about where they live, they don’t say neighborhoods, instead, they refer to the street name,” says Jennifer Walton, a Schuylkill County Realtor at BHHS Homesale Schuylkill Haven with 8 years of experience.

Homes in proximity to John S. Clarke Elementary Center

Primarily built in the first half of the 20th century, a mix of attached row houses and single-family homes sit along the winding hillsides of Mount Hope. Single-family houses here often list between $120,000 and $250,000, while row houses and properties closer to downtown may go between $50,000 and $120,000. Occasionally one will see properties under $50,000 selling in as-is condition. Houses that are farther from downtown have larger lots compared to those closer to the city center, and yard spaces can be between quarter-acre to half-acre with driveways. Properties are also often perched above ground level, and there are usually stairs that connect the front door or the front porch to the sidewalks. Street parking is common in areas closer to downtown, and the city has created the Flight Blight Task Force to address the safety hazards of houses that have fallen into disrepair.

Pottsville Area School District

Students in Mount Hope are zoned for the Pottsville Area School District, which has a student-to-teacher ratio of 15-to-1. John S. Clarke Elementary Center and D.H.H. Lengel Middle School both have a C-plus Niche rating. Clarke Elementary has a daily news announcement broadcast over a YouTube channel that is created by and for the students. Lengel Middle School offers extracurricular sports and activities, including wrestling, basketball, spelling bee and an ecology club. Scoring a B-minus and known as “castle on a hill” for its commanding 1900s Italian-Gothic brickwork architecture, Pottsville Area High School recently upgraded its planetarium and observatory.

Shopping and dining in downtown Pottsville

While several restaurants, such as Suglia's Pizza and Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard, are located around Mount Hope, residents can walk several blocks south to downtown Pottsville for shopping and dining. Popular restaurants and boutiques in downtown include Roma Pizza, Pressed Coffee & Books and Kitty Lou. Grocery stores such as Weis Markets and Aldi are about 4 miles northeast of the community, and farther north, the Fairlane Village Mall has big-box and department stores such as Kohl’s, Boscov’s and Lowe’s.

Recreation centers around Mount Hope

There are several recreation centers, sports fields and a dog park around the neighborhood. The John F. Kennedy Memorial Recreation Complex and the JFK Memorial Pool are located near the west end, featuring tennis and basketball courts and an outdoor pool that opens in the summer. Located right by the area’s east corner, the Barefield Outdoor Recreation Complex has more sports facilities, an open field and picnic areas. A few blocks down the street, the Schuylkill YMCA offers more youth and fitness programs as well as summer camps. For those who prefer additional outdoor places, Famous Reading Outdoors, a 27,000-acre private off-road park for four-wheel drives, and Locust Lake State Park are located within 30 miles of Mount Hope.

Navigating into Allentown and Philadelphia

Mount Hope is about 1.5 miles west of the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill. Many places of worship are also around the city. Although some parts of Mount Hope have sidewalks, the community remains car-dependent. Pennsylvania Route 61 and U.S. Route 209 are close to the neighborhood and make drives into the rest of the county convenient. Allentown and Lehigh Valley International Airport are both about 50 miles east via Pennsylvania Route 61 and Interstate 78. Philadelphia is about 98 miles south of Mount Hope, and those who use public transit can take the Schuylkill Transportation System’s buses.

Annual celebrations in Schuylkill County

The Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival has been a tradition in the county for many decades, and it is considered one of the most celebrated events of the year. Young women go through pageant practices, tea parties and a fashion show to show their talents, and the Queen of Snows is named and crowned at the annual pageant ball. Other highlighted events include the Schuylkill Winterfest, the Yuengling Stars & Stripes Summer Celebration and the parades for St. Patrick’s Day and July 4th.

Effects of coal mining in Pottsville

As a mining community since the 1700s, Pottsville today still has some active strip mine sites outside the city limits. Potential effects of coal mining can include acid mine drainage from abandoned mines, which typically leads to local groundwater and soil contamination. Coal mine dust may also pose air pollution and health risks to miners. In 2023, the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement has been giving funding to Pottsville and the county to support water treatment projects that help restore the local streams to health.
