Historic charm in Quinnstown
Quinntown is a historically affluent neighborhood in the city of Pottsville atop the meandering ridgelines of the Appalachian Mountains. "We are a very rural area, so by the region's standards, Pottsville is classified as a large city," says Amy Johnson, broker and owner at RE/MAX Five Star Realty. "But it has that small-town, close-knit community and affordable homes which have drawn many buyers from the mid-Atlantic in recent years."
In the 1800s, the discovery of anthracite coal led to Pottsville's coal rush, spurring development in an otherwise untouched area of eastern Pennsylvania. As the state's coal region began to flourish, businesses moved into town to meet the needs of a growing workforce, including Yuengling, America's oldest brewery. But Yuengling isn't the only historical landmark still standing.
The city's history seeps through its tree-lined streets. Quinnstown's eclectic mix of rowhouses and duplexes line U.S. Route 209 or Market Street while surrounding streets gain in elevation. Farther up the hill, stately homes canopied by mature foliage are reminiscent of the town's former glory. In its heyday, prosperous businessmen like Frank D. Yuengling crafted custom-built hilltop estates in Quinnstown. Today, Yuengling's historic Tudor Revival mansion has been converted into an event venue but is just one of many grand estates hidden among Quinntown's rolling hills. With a mix of architecture styles, tree-lined sidewalks and nearby green spaces, Quinnstown offers historic charm and comparatively affordable homes in the heart of Pottsville.

Rowhouses, duplexes and single-family homes
Historic 19th- and 20th-century rowhouses and twin duplexes line West Market Street. Farther up the hill, duplexes slowly give way to cozy single-family bungalows, Colonial Revivals and American Foursquares. "Duplexes typically range from the low-to-high $100,000s," Johnson says, while fixer-uppers can sell for less. Some of Quinntown's most spacious estates are hidden behind towering pines and maple trees up the hill, with styles ranging from Tudor Revivals to Georgian Colonial estates. These homes are scattered among 20th-century ramblers, with prices ranging from about $150,000 to $350,000, while the occasional historic mansion can sell into the upper $700,000s.

Recreational opportunities around Quinnstown
The Pottsville Recreation Commission oversees parks and recreation facilities across the city. A short walk from Quinnstown leads to Yuengling Park, a quiet refuge with a blooming garden, fountain and pavilion. Down the street, Bunker Hill Park and Playground is one of several green spaces around town with climbing structures, a basketball court and new pickleball courts.
John F. Kennedy Memorial Recreation Complex features multiple basketball courts, tennis courts and an outdoor community pool about 1 mile from Quinnstown. Bikers and joggers can also explore the JFK Walking Trail that starts at the entrance of the recreation complex and spans about a mile through neighboring woodlands. Locals are working with the city to expand the trail by nearly 2 miles, creating a greenway that connects the Pottsville Area School District with Downtown Pottsville. "The Schuylkill River Trail also runs through the city," Johnson says. "Then the Appalachian Trail is practically in our backyard. Pottsville has a lot to offer. There are dozens of nearby hiking trails, open space and ATV and recreational vehicle areas just outside the city."
About 20 miles east of the neighborhood, Locus Mountain gives way to Tuscarora State Park, a 1,618-acre green space with a small lakeside beach, hiking trails and campgrounds. On the other side of the mountain, the nearby Locust Lake State Park is home to a smaller, 52-acre lake dotted with fishing piers and boat ramps. Twenty-six miles west of the neighborhood, Swatara State Park's 3,520 acres offer additional trails for horseback riders and bikers, while the meandering Swatara Creek attracts kayakers and canoeists.

Pottsville's local businesses and chain retailers
In Downtown Pottsville, coffee shops and bakeries are set between nonchalant delis and community staples like Roma Pizzeria and Restaurant. "Everyone loves Roma's," Johnson says. "It's a community staple that's been here forever." Established in 1969, Roma's is known for its wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, traditional pasta dishes and its homegrown list of Philly-style cheesesteaks. D.G. Yuengling & Son's brewery dates its founding back to 1829 but has called Mahantongo Street home since 1831. Today, patrons can tour the building's underground tunnels, peruse the gift shop or order a chilled beer while enjoying live music. The brewery also hosts the Yuengling Stars & Stripes Summer Celebration with beer, live music, and fireworks displays. "Yuengling also sponsors the Lager Jogger 5K every year," Johnson says.
Among Pottsville's revitalization efforts, a new wave of businesses has opened up in Pottsville, including The Farm Store. "The Farm Store is a new grocery store where local farmers can sell their produce, meats, dairy products, honey and more," Johnson says. Dollar stores are scattered around town, while chain grocers like Weis Markets and Aldi line State Route 61. Residents will also find big-box retailers like Harbor Freight and T.J. Maxx here.

"There are also parades for all the major holidays throughout the year like Memorial Day, St. Patrick's Day and New Year's Eve," Johnson says.

Commutes around eastern Pennsylvania
Quinntown residents are about a mile from Downtown Pottsville. Public bus service is available, but many residents still rely on personal vehicles to get around. Lehigh Valley Hospital – Schuylkill and Geisinger St. Luke's Health Center – Pottsville sit within a 2-mile radius of the neighborhood. Pennsylvania State Route 91, U.S. Route 209 and Interstate 81 connect residents to the larger region. Allentown and the Lehigh Valley International Airport are 50 miles away via Interstate 78. "We're only an hour and a half from Philadelphia, and we have buses that go into the city daily," Johnson says. "So, there are a number of residents that commute into Philadelphia, Allentown or Harrisburg."
