Yorkville
Homes and townhouses stand the test of time
Coal mining, followed by steel manufacturing, powered Pottsville’s economy in the 19th century. Construction boomed during that time, and some small Victorian-era homes remain in Yorkville. Most houses were built later, including American Foursquares and ranch-style designs. Single-family prices start at around $165,000, climbing to $350,000. Early 1900s townhouses and rowhouses painted blue, yellow and white line some blocks, with prices ranging from $90,000 to $175,000. Investors from other states have been drawn to the neighborhood in recent years. “They’re coming to this area, buying less expensive properties and fixing, renting and flipping them,” Laguna says.Businesses on Route 209 have been in Pottsville for 100-plus years
Restaurants and retailers on U.S. Route 209, Yorkville’s commercial avenue, are limited, but they have long local histories. For example, Hadesty’s Ace Hardware traces its presence back to 1857. A block away, The Coney Island splits its business into two sides; one is a restaurant known for its hot dogs, and the other is a full bar. The Coney Island opened downtown in 1917, later moving to Yorkville. Route 209 is also home to Boyer’s, a Pennsylvania grocery chain. About half a mile east of Yorkville, downtown hosts bars and restaurants, as well as the Yuengling brewery. The oldest active brewery in the U.S., it offers visitors free tours that include complimentary beer samples. A downtown revitalization project kicked off in 2017, with restaurants, boutique shops and a farm-to-table grocery store opening since. On the west end of Yorkville, Geisinger St. Luke's runs an urgent care clinic.Pottsville Area High features notable arena, new wellness center
The Pottsville Area School District oversees three schools, all of which are in or just outside of Yorkville and receive Niche grades of B-minus. John S. Clarke Elementary Center teaches kindergarten through fourth grade, after which students can go to D.H.H. Lengel Middle School until they complete eighth grade. At Pottsville Area High School, student athletes use some of the best sports facilities in the region, including the 4,000-seat basketball arena called Martz Hall. Since 1970, it has hosted basketball games, the Harlem Globetrotters and even a Muhammad Ali fight. Plus, the high school recently renovated an old gym into a wellness center with a turf field and batting cages. High school teams, local sports leagues and Pottsville residents can reserve the center.Tennis, swimming and baseball at Yorkville’s parks
A row of basketball and tennis courts at John F. Kennedy Memorial Recreation Complex hosts games, and Pottsville residents get discounted season passes to the facility's swimming pool, open from June to August. The JFK Walking Trail starts at the recreation complex and extends nearly a mile through Yorkville’s woods. Locals are working with the city to expand the trail by nearly 2 miles and create a greenway connected to downtown by 2030. Meanwhile, Pottsville Area Little League uses two Yorkville baseball diamonds for practices and games: Railway Park on the north side of the neighborhood and Pottsville Rotary Little League Field on the south end. On the weekends, people skate at Roller Roost Sports Arena, which occasionally hosts hockey, volleyball and roller derby matchups.Bleenies and camaraderie at the Yorkville Block Party
The Pottsville Fire Department organizes the annual Yorkville Block Party, a nearly 100-year-old tradition. Residents fill the streets every August to sample food from vendors serving regional favorites. People line up around the block for bleenies, potato pancakes fried up for the event. Money raised from the block party helps fund the fire department.Highways, buses connect to the rest of Schuylkill County
Depending on where they live, Yorkville residents may be able to walk to parks and businesses in the neighborhood, but people typically drive to get around Pottsville. Route 209 and Pennsylvania Route 61 connect to the larger region, as well as to Interstate 81. Schuylkill Transportation System buses stop on Route 209, taking riders around Pottsville.
