The site of a major 1862 Civil War battleground, Prairie Grove, Arkansas, has evolved from an agricultural area to a growing community full of families and rich in history. Its historic preservation efforts can be seen at places like the Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park, where war re-enactments walking tours take place, and mainstays like the Aquatic Center, the Prairie Grove Public Library, and the ever-popular Clothesline Fair attract residents of all ages. As the community continues to grow, new homes are finding their way to the residential areas, making room for anyone who wants to call Prairie Grove home.

New builds by the battlefield
While established homes still stand tall in Prairie Grove, newly built homes are starting to take over, popping up in various versions of the traditional style. These three- and four-bedroom homes don brick, stone and vinyl façades, columned entryways and attached multicar garages. Bi-level homes have Cape Cod influences, displaying dormers with covered front patios instead of porches. Modern farmhouses provide a country living feel with 21st-century amenities, and townhouses offer private attached garages and plenty of windows for ample natural light. Established homes display colonial-inspired architecture and inground pools, and more expansive estates feature massive homes sitting on as much as 17 acres of land with huge, detached garages and paved space. Prices are generally in the $300,000 range, with new builds reaching the $500,000 range. New townhouses are priced in the mid-$200,000s, and expansive estates can reach just over $1 million.
Newer constructions in Prairie Grove include brick ranch-style homes.

The enduring legacy of Prairie Grove Battlefield
As a memorial to the Civil War’s Battle of Prairie Grove — fought on December 7, 1862 — Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park shines a light on what’s considered the last major battle fought in Northwest Arkansas. Covering 900 acres of land, the park has developed specialized programming and events and offers walking and driving tours to educate visitors on the site's significance. “This park brings in a lot of tourists, which helps out small businesses in the area,” says Mattison Griffin, park interpreter at the Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park. “It gives the community a place to come explore and enjoy the nature in the area, and residents love the programs and walking trails.” The park also features the onsite Hindman Hall Museum, which houses artifacts that have been recovered from the pivotal battle. Admission is free.

Singing while shopping at The Junk Ranch
The Junk Ranch is a popular second-hand shopping experience where buyers can sift through thousands of items being repurposed and resold. Vendors fill a field with everything from furniture and bedding to apparel and footwear and all kinds of bric-a-brac in between. The Junk Ranch also has live bands performing during the shopping experience. “We do our grocery shopping at Harps Food Stores, but we’re 15 minutes from Fayetteville, and they have Walmart Neighborhood Markets, too,” says Griffin. “Gabriela’s is a nice spot for Mexican food, and Coyle’s Family Restaurant is good for downhome cooking.”

Craft fairs and Christmas concerts
Every other year — on even-numbered years — Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park hosts the state’s largest Civil War re-enactment. The park also hosts an annual Sounds of the Times concert where Christmas music from the 1860s is performed. Both events take place in December. Prairie Grove also celebrates its Centennial in 2023, with an entire lineup of events to come. “Another big event is the Clothesline Fair hosted by the Lions Club at the battlefield site,” says Griffin. “It’s a three-day-long craft fair during Labor Day weekend that we’ve had for 50 years. There’s a huge parade that comes down Main Street for it, but locals really enjoy the square-dancing competition the most.”
Academics in Prairie Grove
Served by multiple school districts, students have a variety of schools to choose from when mapping out their educational journeys. Under the Prairie Grove School District, students can attend Prairie Grove Elementary, Middle and Junior High School to prepare for Prairie Grove High School. Accomplished in academics and athletics, the high school has the distinction of being recognized as an AP District of the Year awardee, holds state championships in girls’ basketball and competitive cheer and counts Major League Baseball players Jalen Beeks and Ty Tice among its notable graduates. All the schools have an overall Niche grade of B-plus.
