Wilhoit is a community of less than 700 people, mostly retirees, about 16 miles from Prescott. “People are friendly and neighborly,” says Rose Gowen, a Realtor with Keller Williams Arizona Realty. “It’s quiet and peaceful.” This neighborhood feels secluded because, on most days, there are more tumbleweeds than traffic. However, it is easily accessible by major roads that lead to the cities of Phoenix and Prescott.
Wilhoit borders Quartz Mountain National Forest. Here, hiking, horseback riding and camping in nature is a popular pastime. Thumb Butte and Sunset Lookout are two nearby hiking areas, about 10 and 20 miles away. Prescott Action Shooters is a nearby gun range about two miles west of the neighborhood.
Wilhoit is a hilly desert neighborhood with dusty streets and sparse vegetation across the landscape, which stretches on for miles. “You have fantastic views,” says Gowen. “You get nice sunsets.” The neighborhood’s housing stock primarily consists of 2 to 3-bedroom manufactured homes on 1 to 2 acres of land, which range in price from $90,000 to $350,000. There are also single-family homes in the neighborhood, but they are a minority of the available housing stock and tend to be log cabin-style or custom builds with 3 to 4 bedrooms and 2 or more baths with 2,000-plus square feet and 2 or more acres of land. These homes typically sell for $400,000 to $465,000. Many homes use septic tanks, and the neighborhood has no homeowner’s associations. Homebuyers should know that Wilhoit scores a 1 out of 10 on the CAP Crime Index, which is lower than the national average of 4. Wilhoit also has an 8 out of 10 Fire Factor score from First Street, rated as severe.
The Kirkland School serves kindergarten through 8th grade and has a C-plus rating on Niche. Prescott High School has a B rating on Niche and active sports programs for basketball, girls’ varsity flag football and coed Special Olympics.
U.S. Route 89 is the primary road through the neighborhood. It leads 16 miles northeast to Prescott and connects to U.S. Route 93 which runs to Phoenix about 150 miles south. Dignity Health Yavapai Regional Medical Center West is the nearest hospital, about 17 miles away, and the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is about 110 miles south.
Calvary Chapel New Day, located in the center of Wilhoit, offers weekly services, a food pantry, and various community events, like a Saturday morning swap meet. The Wilhoit Public Library offers various events, like game night and knitting workshops.
The Burro Saloon is Wilhoit’s only restaurant. Motorcycles and 4x4s are often parked outside, and dollar bills signed by regulars are stapled to exposed beams on the ceiling. Country Corner is the neighborhood’s grocery store, good for items like milk and eggs. For bigger shopping trips, Prescott is about 15 miles away. Downtown Prescott’s Whiskey Row is a historical street with restaurants like Palace Restaurant & Saloon and shops like Clothes Hound Clothing Co., a stylish boutique. Prescott’s Safeway is the closest supermarket to Wilhoit.
