A historic small town with colonial charm
Hartford is a historic industrial community west of Providence that shows its character through the well-maintained houses and small-town familiarity. Local shops and restaurants along Hartford Avenue are hubs for locals to gather, perhaps bumping into each other at a 100-year-old bakery. A former sheep farm and factory yard was restored into one of the two popular parks of the area and provides not only educational programs on the industrial history of the area but miles of biking trails along the river and expansive meadows of the wildflowers. Direct access to the area’s interstates and freeways makes any commute a breeze, whether it’s 2 miles to Providence or across state.

Historical beauty maintained in small neighborhoods
“I think the charm of Hartford is the array of beautiful historic capes and colonials that have kept their original character,” says real estate broker Jarrod Lewis, who also lives in Hartford and formerly ran a barber shop in town. A feature of Hartford’s residential areas are the homes dating from 1870 at their earliest up to the 1970s. Colonial and Colonial Revival homes carry the history of the area and can be found in several types like bungalows and multi-level houses. Prices in the area start at $120,000 for smaller homes under 1,000 square feet, while more spacious and updated homes cost up to $500,000. The neighborhood itself presents streets lined by small yards, offering a bit of space for gardening and close quarters with neighbors.

Industrial areas restored to nature at Merino Park
The area features two distinct and popular parks. Merino Park, as its name suggests, is a former sheep farm and industrial factory plaza for merino wool production. It features a playground, a wildflower meadow full of local wildlife and a biking trail that runs along the Woonsaquatucket River. The park also partners with the Woonaquartucket Teen Adventure program, which teaches local park and industrial history. Johnston Park sits at the end of Hartford Avenue and is where many residents spend time at sporting events, seasonal festivals and along the walking trails. The park offers spaces for adult softball leagues and a variety of popular children’s sports, as well as a dog park.

A local hub at Palmeries Bakery
Hartford Ave serves as the area’s main thoroughfare and is lined with local favorites in addition to chain stores. Locals tend to congregate at restaurants like Luigi’s, an Italian diner and bar; Bar 101, a cheap but comfortable bar and grill; and Hei Place, a modern sushi place. Most important to locals is Palmeries, a 100-year-old bakery where many residents get prepared foods, pastries and pizzas. “Those are the spots that you always run into everyone you know, and the regulars stay steady,” says Lewis. While leisure shopping options are limited, locals can go to Smithfield Crossings, a strip mall plaza just under four miles away from the neighborhood with shopping options like Target and Home Depot.

Two miles from Providence
“The best part of Hartford is the accessibility. You can access all the major highways in minutes from any direction,” says Lewis. Hartford sits right along Route 6, which leads to Interstate 295 and Interstate 95, both of which give access to the rest of Rhode Island and out of state. The town is also only 2 miles outside of Providence, so folks looking for broader shopping and dining options can easily reach the capital city.
