A diverse and friendly community in northwest Providence
Less than 3 miles northwest of Downtown Providence sits Mount Pleasant. A community-oriented enclave, this neighborhood, once home to Irish, Italian and Portuguese Americans, now has a growing Hispanic community. While the culture here shifts as years pass, one thing remains: “It’s always been a nice, friendly neighborhood,” says Michael Pinelli, a broker associate with Re/Max Preferred. “You get a lot of home for your money and a good resale value,” adds Pinelli, whose office has been in neighboring North Providence for two decades. With Rhode Island College and Providence College to the north and Roger Williams Medical Center to the east, Mount Pleasant attracts a mix of families, students and medical workers to its array of housing options.

A short walk to local shops and restaurants
Local shops and a collection of Latin American eateries dot Chalkstone Avenue, the neighborhood’s commercial corridor. “There are always people walking up and down the sidewalks and coming in and out of local businesses,” says Cassidy Mills, a local librarian at the Community Libraries of Providence’s Mount Pleasant branch. Locals flock to Orale Taqueria 2 for its authentic birria tacos: cheesy and slow-cooked tortillas paired with a rich dipping broth. El Eden is another neighborhood staple offering cozy Spanish-style stews and breakfast. Pinelli says people line up to try the Peruvian flavors at Machupicchu Restaurant II. “It’s tough to get a reservation. They’re always full,” he notes. A savory meal can end on a sweet note at DeLuise Bakery, a family-run establishment serving the community since the late 1930s. Residents can visit stores such as Walgreens, Mt. Pleasant Hardware, and Chalkstone Supermarket for essentials. Providence Place, a multi-level shopping mall, is 2 miles away.

Getting around Providence
Though walkable and bikeable, the neighborhood has easy access to Route 44 and Interstate 95. Commutes are short to Downtown Providence, less than 3 miles away. Boston is a little more than a 50-mile drive. Commuters can take advantage of the Park & Ride along Chalkstone Avenue or board a Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, or RIPTA, bus at stops around the neighborhood. For trips out of town, T.F. Green International Airport is roughly an 11-mile drive south, and Providence train station is less than 3 miles away.

From single-family colonials to multifamily triple-deckers
From classic New England designs, such as Cape Cod or Shingle, to classic forms including ranch-style and bungalows, Mount Pleasant boasts a range of single-family homes, mostly built between the 19th and 20th centuries. “A lot of houses are in great shape. The price point is good for first-time home buyers or middle-range income,” Pinelli says. Along the tree-lined streets at the neighborhood's northern end sit larger two-story homes, many of which are wood-sided colonials with small columns flanking their front doors. Heading south, more modest postwar homes line the narrow streets. Here, Minimal Traditional houses with brick and vinyl siding and decorative window awnings sit on small, tidy lots. Those seeking alternative housing options will also find the multifamily triple-decker, a quintessential Providence build. Home prices range from $250,000 to $625,000, and like other nearby neighborhoods, housing inventory is low.
