Living between I-95 and Roger Williams Park
Dominated by the grounds of Roger Williams Park, South Elmwood provides its small residential community with access to Providence’s best-known green space just down the street or in their backyards. “Roger Williams Park is a tourist destination, but people also come here just to walk their dogs, run and kayak,” says Victor Lopes, director of the Roger Williams Park Gateway Center. From a small network of streets bordered by intersections of Interstate-95 and the Huntington Expressway, South Elmwood residents can head into the action of downtown Providence or retreat to the waterfront trails and cultural hubs closer to home.

Day trips and casual recreation at Roger Williams Park
Spanning 435 acres, nearly a quarter of which is taken up by lakes dotted with fountains and bridges, Roger Williams Park makes up the majority of South Elmwood. Destinations like the zoo, botanical gardens and natural history museum attract weekenders looking to spend a day getting in touch with nature, connected across grassy, rolling hills by paved roads lined with sidewalks, bike lanes and plenty of mature trees. Between larger attractions, park-goers traverse walking trails and sidewalks toward landmark buildings and picturesque gardens like the Betsey Williams Cottage, Victorian Rose Garden and Japanese Garden.
The park's iconic swan boats launch near the Dalrymple Boathouse, sending aquatic explorers under bridges, past forested islands, and toward the Temple to Music, a classically styled Greek marble temple erected in 1924. At a boat launch nearby, kayakers and canoers launch boats they bring from home. Typical community park staples are found throughout the park, like tennis courts, ball diamonds, playgrounds and a pump track for BMX and mountain bikers.

Dense historic blocks and newer suburban offerings
Concentrated to the southeast of South Elmwood, short, densely plotted streets branch from Elmwood Avenue, lined by narrow sidewalks and shady trees. Two-story homes built in the early 1900s in a range of National and historic revival styles sit down the street from larger multi-family homes in similar styles, selling for $300,000 to $450,000. A few streets with a more suburban feel and slightly larger, grassy lots house ranch-style homes and bi-levels built from the 1960s through 1990s, selling for $330,000 to $450,000. South Elmwood is evenly split between renters and homeowners.

Roger Williams events throughout the year
While many attend well-known events like the Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular, an aptly named Roger Williams Zoo celebration lit by thousands of carefully crafted jack-o-lanterns placed throughout the zoo, the park hosts so many large and small events that it can be hard to keep track. “At the Gateway Center, we can tell you what’s going on today, this week and later in the month,” Lopes says. “We put on free events as well as ones where people buy tickets.” Each summer, free performances by the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra draw hundreds to settle in for a night of music and lakeside views in the grassy fields surrounding the Temple to Music.
Shopping and dining down Elmwood Avenue
Beyond a few automotive shops and the Providence Indoor Paintball near I-95, the commercial and dining scene is limited within South Elmwood. La Roca on the corner of Hamlin Street and Elmwood Avenue is known for dine-in and takeout Dominican favorites, and just over I-95, Pub on Park is a classic neighborhood bar that hosts weekly trivia, comedy and live music nights. For groceries and household essentials locals can head less than a mile down Elmwood Avenue to Price Rite Marketplace and Ocean State Job Lot. A couple of small community churches hold services throughout the area.

The area is not bad or anything, but the roads are what messes up a lot of nice area. The people are good to get to know and the weather is nothing to complain about because we never get anything to serious. i would live here again if giving the choice to do so. If they would fix the street better, the area will improve.
