Peace River is a quiet community fairly removed from most traffic

Peace River is a calm, largely undeveloped community in Charlotte County, bordered by its slow-moving namesake to the west. The river separates the community from busier areas like Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte, but residents still have access to plenty of shopping and dining without much noise. “It’s not the city lifestyle,” says local Realtor Natalia Berie of The Real Estate Store. She’s sold homes across Charlotte County for a few years and lives in Port Charlotte. “It’s a little bit farther from everything and a bit more affordable than nearby areas.” The community’s natural amenities, from nature preserves to the creeks of the Peace River, are major draws.

Undeveloped lots and established homes

Most of the community’s active listings are undeveloped plots of land, typically measuring around a quarter-acre. Plots can sell for $6,000 to $98,000 and need clearing before building. Several single-family homes are still available across the neighborhood, including a mix of New Traditional, ranch-style, manufactured and custom-built homes. Many homes overlook Hunter Creek and Jim Long Lake, featuring private docks and piers. This area of Charlotte County is pretty green, so many yards are full of mature trees, and streets are lined with some brush. The median sale price for a home in the community is around $287,000, but some homes can sell for over $1 million.

Charlotte High School offers a robust list of student clubs

The Charlotte County Public School District scores an overall A-minus on Niche and serves over 16,800 students. East Elementary School receives a B-plus, and Punta Gorda Middle has a B. Charlotte High School offers several clubs and extracurriculars, including the album critics club, best buddies club and blue crew – the high school’s student pep club. Niche gives the high school an overall B-plus.

Exploring Peace River and Shell Creek

The neighborhood’s location along the water encourages residents to get outside. While some residents access the water from private docks at home, several public areas are along the Peace River. The boat ramp at Riverside Park overlooks Shell Creek, which connects with the river in the west. Riverside Park also offers space for fishing and picnics. The Prairie/Shell Creek nature preserve is a massive tract of sandy scrub and salt marshes. It features about 5 miles of nature trails, where folks can see an alligator or gopher tortoise. Fishing is also permitted in the preserve. Hathaway Park, about 8 miles east, has picnic pavilions, grills, nature trails and a boat ramp. Paradise Golf Course, just north of the community, offers a 12-hole course open to the public.

Nearby cities have ample shopping and dining options

The community’s retail activity is limited to Dollar General on Duncan Road. Residents also have access to Bar 17, an open-air event venue and bar. The establishment hosts karaoke on Thursdays and local bands on Saturdays and Sundays. In addition to beer and cocktails, bar-goers enjoy burgers, chicken fingers and fried appetizers. Central Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte offer additional shopping and dining options. TT’s Tiki Bar in Punta Gorda, about 11 miles away, is a busy hangout spot overlooking the Peace River with food, drinks and plenty of Adirondack chairs in the sand. Winn-Dixie is one of the nearest grocery stores, about 7 miles away.

Heading to Punta Gorda

Residents depend on cars to get around, but Charlotte County Transit offers on-demand transportation services from Monday through Friday. Rides are free and must be reserved. U.S. Route 17 is the community’s primary thoroughfare, connecting commuters with central Punta Gorda, about 10 miles southwest. Route 17 meets Interstate 75 about 8 miles south, running south toward Fort Myers. HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital is about 15 miles away, and Punta Gorda Airport is a 10-mile trip.

Flooding risks in Charlotte County

According to the FEMA National Risk Index, Charlotte County has a relatively high risk of hurricanes. The neighborhood’s location along the Peace River increases the risk of flooding, and flood insurance is recommended.
