Small northeastern Connecticut town with a lively community

Set in the rural landscape of Northeast Connecticut, Putnam is a small town known for its antique markets and walkable downtown. Though Putnam's forested, hilly landscape and winding Quinebaug River create a rural atmosphere, the town comes alive during its frequent community events. "People don't always know about everything there is to do here. People are just looking for a house in a central area at a good price point. But once they come to Putnam, they want to live here forever. It's a great place to live, and there's events constantly," says JoAnn Hall, real estate agent at Re/Max Bell Park.

Dining on Putnam's Main Street

"Every restaurant on Main Street is worth a try. They're all wonderful, and they all have different specialties," Hall says. The Hare & The Hound is among these options and serves Irish dishes like Guinness Stew Crock, Bangers and Mash, and Shepherd's Pie. The Stomping Ground is another local favorite. Locals can grab a craft beer and a basket of wings to unwind and listen to the bar's nightly live music lineup. Putnam's Antique Marketplace, one of the town's claims to fame, has four floors and 350 seller booths brimming with furniture, jewelry, artwork, books and more antique and second-hand treasures to sift through. For groceries, Putnam conveniently has a Price Chopper and Walgreens off Kennedy Drive.

First Fridays, Holiday Dazzle Light Parade, and Fire & Ice Festival

First Fridays, the town's monthly street fair with a new theme each month from May to October, brings the community together for some fun. "Everyone comes out and dresses in their costumes. They have parades, vendors, street performers and face painters," Hall says. Putnam embraces Connecticut's cold winters with its Fire & Ice Festival, one of New England's largest ice sculpture festivals, held in February each year. "They get ice delivered in the morning, and the artists carve something beautiful," Hall says. In December, the Holiday Dazzle Light Parade brightens the season: "People bring their pickup trucks and load it up with Christmas lights. Local organizations, businesses and farmers decorate their trucks and come out for the parade," Hall says. "It's been going on for more than 20 years, and it's been expanding each year. There are probably 150 floats that entered." Also downtown, The Bradley Playhouse performs a season of amateur theatrical productions and concerts.

Walking along the River Trail and Airline Trail

Putnam's River Trail along the Quinebaug River lends space to walkers and bikers. Along the River Trail, locals can enjoy views of waterfalls at Rotary Park, take the pups out to play at Putnam Lions Memorial Park, or check out the pool and other facilities at the Hale YMCA Youth and Family Center. "People use the River Trail constantly, every day. It's all interconnected to downtown, and it goes right to the YMCA. It's very walkable," Hall says. The Airline Trail, a multi-use pedestrian trail spanning over 60 miles across Connecticut, also runs through the outskirts of Putnam.

Victorian, colonial and ranch homes near downtown

Many homes in Putnam sit within walking distance of the downtown area. "There's a lot of small little neighborhoods around town. The town is divided by the Quinebaug River, which flooded in 1955. The bridge broke, and it divided the town," Hall says. Homes include townhouses, condos and ranches priced between $200,000 and $400,000, as well as sprawling Victorians and Colonials dating as far back as the late 1800s and early 1900s in the same price range. Putnam also has a small selection of apartments. "We have some old mills in town. They converted an old textile mill into apartments, and there's another they're trying to revitalize," Hall says.
