Murray Hill-Broadway home to a strong restaurant scene

Step out of the Long Island Rail Road station in Murray Hill-Broadway, and you’ll find yourself in Food Alley. This section of the neighborhood gets its name from the blocks of restaurants, many of which specialize in Korean cuisine, surrounding the train station. Food Alley is just one part of the robust culinary scene in Murray Hill-Broadway. A corridor of dozens of restaurants, cafes and bars stretch between the neighborhood’s two train stations, both of which keep the rapidly developing Queens neighborhood connected to Manhattan.

How much condos and homes cost

Condo complexes fill the west side of Murray Hill-Broadway, while single-family houses are more common in the rest of the neighborhood. Although the neighborhood’s single-family homes average only about 1,600 square feet, hundreds span over 3,000 square feet. Large Colonial Revivals and Tudor-inspired homes sometimes contain five or six bedrooms. "Murray Hill has some larger, stately homes that were owned by successful business people," says Wayne Rose, a Flushing-based associate broker with Century Homes Realty Group. "You’ll see them redeveloped. People want bigger closets and more bathrooms." Single-family homes have recently sold between the lower $800,000s and nearly $2 million.

Condo communities include historic brick towers with renovated interiors and modern buildings with glass exteriors. Many of the neighborhood's new condo and apartment towers are rising along Northern Boulevard. "If you had a car dealership [on Northern Boulevard], that’s gone, and now it’s a 12-story building," Rose says. One- and two-bedroom condos typically range from the lower $400,000s to the mid-$800,000s, while three-bedroom units have sold from the upper $800,000s to the mid-$900,000s.

Restaurants and groceries in Food Alley, on Northern Boulevard

Head to Food Alley for noodle soup from JeunJu Korean Restaurant or pork belly and live eel at Yuk Jun Gui. Another dining district extends down Northern Boulevard. Businesses there include:

  • Cafe Joie: Coffee shop with sandwiches and Jolly Pong shakes
  • H Mart: Supermarket chain with a large selection of Asian foods
  • Parksanbal: Korean eatery with a one-item menu that still draws crowds
  • Singing Karaoke Club: Late-night bar with reservable karaoke rooms

Commuting to Manhattan by rail and car

The subway system doesn’t service the neighborhood, but there are still plenty of transit options. The Long Island Rail Road stops at two neighborhood stations: Murray Hill and Broadway. You can use either to ride to Manhattan’s Penn Station in less than 30 minutes. City buses stop throughout the neighborhood, including along Bayside Avenue and Northern Boulevard. Drivers can take the latter roadway to get on Interstate 495 and travel to Manhattan. The 12-mile drive may take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half. LaGuardia Airport, 3 miles away, is accessible by bus or car.

Flushing International High School serves immigrant students

The neighborhood is home to P.S. 22Q Thomas Jefferson School, a highly rated elementary school. A few blocks away, The Flushing International High School serves students who have recently immigrated to the U.S. and want to improve their English skills. The high school runs an internship program to help students get work experience at local hospitals, museums and small businesses.

Get outdoors at Flushing Fields, Murray Hill Playground

Murray Hill-Broadway lacks the large parks found in other areas of Queen, but a few green spaces dot the neighborhood. Homes are less than a 15-minute walk from one of these parks, and many houses are just a block away. Neighborhood parks include:

  • Bowne Park: Walk the shaded grounds at this park that was once home to a mayor’s 19th-century estate
  • Flushing Fields: Play baseball, tennis and football at this sports complex
  • Murray Hill Playground: Get moving at this pocket park’s playground and handball courts
Plus, Murray Hill is only a mile from Kissena Park. The 237-acre green space spans from the Kissena Golf Course to the Kissena Velodrome, a 400-meter cycling track.
