Oakland Gardens
Two major parks with popular, forested trailheads
Oakland Gardens is bordered by two gorgeous parks—both part of an interconnected series of greenspaces within Queens—that are walkable from nearly every residence in the neighborhood. “Alley Pond Park is a big favorite. It’s very picturesque and beautiful, with a resident swan and ducks. There’s access to wildlife and nature, without having to travel a far distance. They added a new bike lane recently, too,” says McNeil. “Vanderbilt Parkway is another big draw for walkability and dogs,” she adds. To the west, Cunningham Park is the spot for sports: there’s a soccer field and an access point to a popular BMX and mountain bike trailhead. Just north of the neighborhood, Oakland Lake is another spot for outdoor activity: “It’s a half-mile around, and the city paved the walkway around the park. There’s also a running trail that goes from there to the Long Island Expressway, which makes for a really nice run. It’s almost like you’re in the middle of the forest when the trees have all the leaves. It’s like trail running in the middle of the city,” McNeil adds.Plenty of single-family homes for just under $1 million
Oakland Gardens has a very popular market right now, especially due to the larger lots for single-family homes, which typically range between $899,000 and $1.2 million. Most homes were built in the midcentury, consisting of Cape Cod, colonial, and ranch styles, but McNeil is seeing a new trend over recent years: “A lot of individuals and families are buying them to build newer homes, not necessarily developers. There’s a lot of new construction,” she says. There are also garden-style co-ops in the area, generally ranging anywhere from $275,000 to $365,000, as well as several units available in brick-clad, mid-rise buildings with similar pricing.Mom-and-pop, local dining with standout Asian food
Off Springfield Boulevard and I-495/Long Island Expressway, aka the LIE, there's a small area dotted with Asian eateries and mom-and-pop dining, including Korean rolls at Rolly Kimbab, mouthwatering Korean barbecue at Chilsung Garden, Shanghai dumplings at Little Dumpling Bayside, and Cantonese and Japanese cuisines. Three grocery stores are also in the area, including Holiday Farms Supermarket, as well as delis, pharmacies and bakeries. Along Bell Boulevard, a popular main street that runs north-west into Bayside, residents can find more local restaurants, such as comfort food at Bell Diner and Italian at Villa Rustica.High-quality, A-rated public schools
Another perk of the area—and a big draw for families—is the top-tier public schools, many of which are highly-ranked. P.S. 188 Kingsbury, A-rated by Niche, falls into the top 100 elementary schools in New York. Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School 74, also A-rated by Niche, ranks in the top 30 public middle schools in New York and has engaging art, music and athletic programming for students. Just north in neighboring Bayside, Benjamin N. Cardozo High School receives an A-minus rating on Niche and ranks among the top 40 most diverse public high schools in New York.No subway, but LIRR is within 1.5 miles
With a ring of expressways surrounding the neighborhood, commuters can get to Manhattan or Brooklyn in roughly an hour by car, or under 20 miles. Long Island, towards the east, and Manhattan, towards the west, can both be accessed via the Long Island Expressway (LIE)/ I-495. There is no subway in the neighborhood, but the LIRR can be accessed 2 miles to the south or 1.5 miles to the north.
