A history of Black music legends in an urban residential setting
The musical legacy of this small Southeast Queens community is formidable and continues to draw people to the area. Previous residents include jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, James Brown and John Coltrane, as well as hip-hop pioneers LL Cool J and members of A Tribe Called Quest. “The roots are still there,” says Chatter Singh, a Queens native and real estate agent for Keller Williams Liberty. “Folks have been there 40, 50, 60 years. It’s a multi-generational community.” The St. Albans Community Living Center, a veterans hospital, is also integral to this proud and historically minded community.

Large lots and a historic district
“The beauty of St. Albans is that it has larger-sized lots compared to other areas of Queens,” says Singh. “You have more garages and larger homes, more reasonably priced.” The majority of the homes in the area are single-family properties, thanks to rezoning that discourages housing density. Homes include colonials, Cape Cods and Tudors, many of them three-bedrooms, with prices ranging from $575,000 to $800,000. Colonial Revival and Tudor-style homes in the subdivision of Addisleigh Park, recently designated a historic locale by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, date to the 1930s and list for about $800,000 to $1 million. Distressed properties in St. Albans can be bought for around $500,000. "Home prices in this area can be really far apart, because of location," says Michele Cheng, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. "It's at the intersection of a bunch of different lifestyles in Queens."
Older tudor style homes made of brick can be found throughout St Albans.

Jamaican food, a small theater and a big arena
Jamaican and Caribbean cuisine are staples here, and popular restaurants include Fishnet and The Smokehouse. Korean and Chinese food is also available. John’s Farm Market on Farmers Boulevard sells groceries and Earnest Foods is a locally-owned organic and natural grocery store. Founded in 1970, the Black Spectrum Theatre in Roy Wilkins Park performs socially conscious plays for the community. The UBS Arena in nearby Elmont opened in 2021 and hosts concerts, events and is the home of the New York Islanders. In addition to offering entertainment options, Singh credits the venue with bringing jobs to the area and raising property values.

Generally, the people are nice to each other. Occasionally, there are incidents where the police is called, but as long as you're a law abiding citizen you have nothing to worry about. There are stores near by everywhere within walking distance and plenty of buses pass through as well.

I've been living in St. Albans Queens for all of my life and it is a very peaceful area that is great for suburban life. There are many good areas around St. Albans and there are very good spots to visit and to eat. You will not have to worry about have to worry about transportation as there are about 4 main lines that run from St.Albans. There is the q4 and q84 that can take you to the parsons and archers station and there are the q3 and the q27 which can take you to flushing and jfk airport. In walking distance, there is a Popeyes, dunkin donuts, hair salon shops, family dollar, and many other places to eat and its very convient. The area has two public schools that are walking distance and this includes ps. 15 which is a good elementary school and ps.36 that is also a good school to enroll students. This a great area that love living and i can say is very safe for families and students looking for a nice suburban area to live in.
