A diverse neighborhood close to nature and the city
With its historic, single-family homes and quiet streets, Woodhaven may seem like a typical, American suburb at first glance. But after walking a few blocks and hearing the diversity of languages, it becomes clear that it’s a definitive Queens neighborhood. With its culturally diverse population and tight-knit community, Woodhaven has a little bit of everything: proximity to nature, a focus on small businesses, and access to Manhattan via the J line. “Woodhaven is a suburban enclave in a very busy borough. It’s very quiet and family-oriented, and you can get anything at your fingertips. You have Jamaica Avenue where you can get every type of food. It’s very convenient and very historic, as well,” Jennifer Scala, a real estate salesperson with Keller Williams Realty Liberty who specializes in the area. There’s also a strong sense of history fostered through local landmarks, like the historical home of Betty Smith, the author of “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.” Bordered by Forest Park to the north and the commercial thoroughfare of Atlantic Avenue to the south, residents move here for the accessibly priced homes and larger spaces.

A large park with a 110-acre golf course
“The gem of Woodhaven is Forest Park, which is sometimes dubbed the ‘Central Park of Queens.’ It’s extremely beautiful with many species of birds. In some parts you can see the city skyline,” says Scala. This hilly, 500-acre forested green space offers plenty of amenities, too: “There are hiking trails, a running track, a golf course, a baseball field, a bandshell. Sometimes there’s an orchestra. It’s a beautiful place to see a concert,” she adds. There’s also a private stable offering horse rides and a century-old Forest Park Carousel that still draws visitors during the summer months, and like many of the area’s homes, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Internationally-focused gastronomy with limited shopping
Locally-owned, globally inspired dining can be found along Jamaica Avenue, including Dominican, Ecuadorean, Chinese and Mexican. Schmidt’s Candy, a favorite for both little ones and adults, has been making classic German sweets since 1925, making it a great stop on the way to the park. Health food is fairly difficult to come by, but it’s something the neighborhood is trying to address. When it comes to nightlife, Neir’s Tavern has been slinging pints and a savory selection of bar food since 1829, and many would recognize the bar’s interior from the classic film “Goodfellas.” Stop & Shop serves as the main grocery store on Atlantic Avenue, C Town is northwest on Jamaica Avenue, and bodegas, barber shops and beauty salons can also be found in between.

Woodhaven is a community that is bustling with life and activity. It has many places to explore from parks to shopping centers. There are also countless different stores for you to buy the necessities and it has easy access to these places. For those without cars, there is easy access to the train and bus services. All in all, it is a community suitable and safe for everyone.

I like living here, it's very diverse and an easy commute to Manhattan and Brooklyn. The only things I don't like are the buses and the littering. The streets are very dirty around here and it's embarrassing. The buses are never on time and it is extremely frustrating.

I love the cohesive community. Everyone knows everyone. There are a variety of stores in my neighborhood. There are nearby parks and even a library. My only complaint is that some people like to cause a raucous by blasting music. But other than that, Woodhaven is a clean, wonderful area to live in.
