Germantown is a small neighborhood that neighbors the Quincy Bay.
A neighborhood on a peninsula
Throughout its history, Germantown has attracted workers striving to build better lives. German glassmakers and weavers first settled the neighborhood in the 1750s, but most abandoned the project within a decade. In the late 18th century, Germantown was reinvigorated by the shipbuilding industry, which brought laborers who needed a place to live. Today, it is a quiet neighborhood for folks looking to settle down. “Germantown is a family-oriented blue-collar neighborhood,” says Broker Rick Murray, who works with William Raveis Real Estate and has sold homes in the neighborhood for over 30 years. Murray learned about the neighborhood’s strong communal backbone at a young age. “When I was growing up, many of my friends lived in Germantown,” Murray says. “The people that I know who grew up in Germantown are very tight knit to this day. Some return in their old age.” Built on a peninsula, Germantown offers panoramic views of Town River Bay, Weymouth Fore River and Rock Island Cove.
Waterfront Cape Cods and bi-level houses
The neighborhood's real estate is primarily made up of apartments. Most of Germantown's current single-family housing stock was developed between the 1940s and 70. The neighborhood's non-waterfront Cape Cods are valued from $430,000 to $700,000. “You got some really amazing waterfront homes,” Murray says. “There have lately been some million-dollar sales for direct waterfront property.” Waterfront Cape Cods from the same period are valued from $570,000 to $1 million. Four-bedroom 1970s bi-level houses are valued from $750,000 to $840,000. Assessors value the neighborhood's turn-of-the-century bungalows at between $450,000 and $540,000.
Cape Cod style homes are particularly common in Germantown.
Some Germantown residents optimize their location by building modern homes with water views.

Fire Station Beach and the Germantown Neighborhood Center
Germantown offers access to waterfront parks and playgrounds. Locals head to Fire Station Beach overlooking the Weymouth Fore River to watch reed grass quiver in the breeze as schooners sail past. Locals create their own fun along the shoreline. “One of the big things we all did growing up was clam digging,” Murray says. Clipper Marina offers year-round boat storage. Overlooking the bay on the neighborhood's south end, Taffrail Road Playground has a splash pad where children cool off in the summer. Jean Kennedy Playground, on Doane Street, has nets and octagonal blocks for children to climb and a half-length basketball court. Harbor Side Park on Palmer Street also has playground equipment. The Germantown Neighborhood Center offers the community use of its classrooms, music center, recording studio and performance stage. A food pantry operates out of the center. The local garden club plants flowers and produce on the property. “Germantown is also within walking distance of The Blue Hills Reservation, a 7,000-acre green oasis, which offers hiking and walking trails,” says Realtor Matthew Langlois, who sells homes in the area with Keller Williams Realty.
