Tranquility and natural beauty on the Squantum Peninsula
Almost entirely surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the barrier island community of Squantum has gained a reputation within greater Quincy as a tranquil, safe place ideal for families and those who appreciate natural beauty. Well-established homes with generations-old families line the sidewalk-bordered streets. This level of history has led to high levels of community engagement and an active social scene. “It’s such a tight-knit group,” says William Harris, City Councillor for Quincy’s Fourth Ward. “People are very involved and very aware of everything going on.”
Calm coastlines and active marshes
With miles of coastline and marshlands, the natural beauty that surrounds Squantum tends to be its biggest draw for new homeowners. With over 100 yards of coastline, Orchard Beach is a small, simple stretch of sand with panoramic views of the Boston Harbor and the islands that dot the horizon. The Squantum Marshes are active with wildlife and among nature lovers and bird watchers. Wendall Moses Playground is a popular spot for families, featuring basketball courts, tennis courts, Little League fields and more.
Specialty programs at North Quincy High
Students can begin their education at Squantum Elementary School before attending Atlantic Middle School, both of which score a B-plus on Niche. Finally, they’ll enroll in North Quincy High School, which earns an A and features Vo-Tech programs in automotive technology, carpentry and more. “My daughter just finished their teaching program, which let her see firsthand what being a teacher was like,” says Scott Campbell, Councilor at Large for the city of Quincy. “Now she’s studying that at University. I give a lot of credit to that school for giving her that head start.” Plans for a new elementary school are underway, and construction should begin in 2025.
Thanksgiving Turkey Trots
PorchFest comes to Squantum and several other Quincy neighborhoods in the summer, hosting over 120 live music acts that will perform on porches, stoops and front yards all over the area. During the 4th of July, runners of all ages challenge each other for bragging rights during the Squantum Road Race, which helps raise money for the annual 4th of July parade. The annual Turkey Trot is ideal for locals to burn off some of the day’s turkey and stuffing.
Multigenerational homes and ocean-view estates
While new construction isn’t unheard of, most Squantum homes are well-established and built in the 20th century. Proximity to Boston alone fetches higher-than-average prices, but the area’s safety, coastal charm and rooted community amplifies this. “It’s slightly more expensive in that area than Quincy Point or Quincy Adams,” says Chris Yang, Realtor with Keller Williams Boston Southwest. “The people who have property over there tend to keep it.” Ranch homes begin in the low $600,000s, while historic Dutch Colonials reach the high-$900,000s. Contemporary ocean-view estates can get as high as $1.9 million.
Pizza at Carmine's Café
Carmine’s Café stands out as one of the community’s only restaurants, serving up slices of pizza and Italian classics with outdoor seating since 1999. Groceries, baked goods and other necessities can be picked up at Marina Bay Market 2 miles away, while retail therapy can be found at North Quincy’s Target some 2.5 miles southwest.
From the bay to Boston
Nearby, Interstate 93 runs through Boston and into New Hampshire and Vermont. For trips farther afield, Boston Logan International Airport is 13 miles north. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority also runs a regular bus line through Squantum and into the greater Boston area for people looking to make a day trip.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
