A sleepy beach town south of Boston
Located in the heart of Quincy, the coastal community of Wollaston has a reputation that goes beyond its proximity to the beach. “We have a school system and a level of safety that homebuyers find very attractive,” says Walter Hubley, President of the Wollaston Hill Neighborhood Association. Dotted with well-established homes, the area avoids the crude tourist trap vibe that’s become ubiquitous in other beach towns. Instead, the area maintains its distinctly New England sensibility with historic homes and architecture. 8 miles south of Boston, Wollaston is popular with commuters who work in the city but prefer a more suburban lifestyle during their off hours.
Fishing and sunbathing on Quincy Bay
The ocean is a major draw for anyone moving to Quincy, and Wollaston is no different. With over half a mile of coastline on Quincy Bay, locals take advantage of Wollaston Beach through sunbathing, boating, fishing and swimming, all with Boston’s skyline stretching against the horizon in the distance. Further inland, residents can visit Safford Park, a pocket park known for hosting regular live performances and an annual Christmas tree lighting.
Concerts in Safford Park
During the final summer months, Safford Park hosts Saturdays In The Park, a concert series featuring different bands every Saturday, along with food and a Biergarten. Wollaston is also one of the Quincy neighborhoods that host PorchFest, where over 120 musical acts will perform on porches, stoops and verandas throughout town. The annual August Moon Festival has celebrated Quincy’s Asian population since 1987 with a street festival filled with vendors, food and live performances.
Historic homes minutes from the beach
“The neighborhoods here are beautiful,” says Hubley of the WHNA. “You’ve got Tudor, Colonial, Cape Cod: a real variety of styles.” Renovated Cape Cod homes a block from the coast start in the mid-$700,000s, while a centennial ocean-view duplex reaches just above $1 million. Condos are also popular in the area, starting at the low $300,000s before peaking at the high $600,000s.
Fried fish and the farmers market
A beach town wouldn’t be the same without an ocean-view seafood spot, and The Clam Box lays claim to that title in Wollaston. Just across the street from Quincy Bay, residents have visited The Clam Box for fried fish, chowder and whole belly clams since 1968. The Hancock Tavern offers cocktails and a classic barroom feel, while the family-owned Thai Saap provides authentic Thai cuisine. The Quincy Farmers Market features local produce, crafts and baked goods every Sunday from June to October.
Vo-Tech within walking distance
Students in Wollaston can begin at the Wollaston School, which scores a B on Niche, before attending Central Middle School, which has an A-minus. Finally, they’ll enroll in North Quincy High School, which earns an A and features Vo-Tech programs in automotive technology, carpentry and more. “Schools are usually within walking distance around here,” says Hubley. “That’s another draw for parents.”
At the center of everything
“In Wollaston you’re in the center of Quincy and everything that offers,” says Hubley. “You’re 8 miles from Boston, you’re 20 minutes from Boston Logan Airport, you’re minutes from the beach. Everything you need is right there.”
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
