Nearly surrounded by the river
A mile and half west of Racine’s Lake Michigan shore, the Root River curls around a small neighborhood of homes and local parks. Racine’s Cedar Bend neighborhood sits on the river, just next to Cedar Bend Park and Clayton Park. The neighborhood’s streets are lined with sidewalks and connect to the Root River Pathway, which crosses over the river and reaches the nearby Washington Park Golf Course. The neighborhood is all residential and park land, but there are local shops and restaurants to the north, and Downtown Racine is about a mile west on 6th Street.
Space to walk and connection to public transit
With plenty of sidewalks and connections to the Root River Pathway, Cedar Bend offer walkers space to roam. On West 6th Street, residents can hop on the RYDE Racine route 86 bus. Just west of the Root River, West 6th Street turns into Kinzie Avenue and takes drivers to South Green Bay Road. To connect to the nation’s network of interstates, drivers can head about eight miles west to reach Interstate 94, which puts downtown Milwaukee a little more than 20 miles away.
Older homes converted into rentals
Home styles are varied throughout Cedar Bend. Homes in the neighborhood date back to the early 1900s and styles include bungalows, ranch-style homes, colonial-style two-stories and Victorian homes. Many of the neighborhood's larger homes have been converted into multi-unit rentals, says Eugene Modesti, broker and co-owner of Modesti Realty. “There are a lot of single-family rental homes,” he says. “They’re really nice houses, but they might need a lot of work.” As one of Racine’s oldest neighborhoods, many of Cedar Bend’s homes were built in the early 1900s. Units in a duplex can sell between $50,000 and $80,000, while single-family homes sell from $90,000 to $180,000. The median single-family home price is $114,000.
