Downtown Racine
Racine’s shopping and dining hotspot
“There’s a restaurant right on the lake, Reef Point Brew House,” says Eugene Modesti, broker and co-owner of Modesti Realty. “There’s Asiana and Sticky Rice. There are also some nice taverns down there too. Toad Hall Pub is a good one.” In addition to the area’s many restaurants, local shops, including Vintage & Modern Books and Chapter 20 Boutique — a women’s clothing store — line the streets of Downtown Racine. Fresh produce and other large grocery needs require a bit of a journey, with Festival Foods and Walmart Neighborhood Market being the closest major grocers, 5 miles west. On Main Street, the Racine Art Museum is home to the largest collection of contemporary crafts in the United States, featuring 11,000 pieces.RYDE Racine bus stops throughout Downtown Racine
As the city center of Racine, Downtown Racine is replete with sidewalks. There are also RYDE Racine bus stops throughout the neighborhood, so residents don’t necessarily need a car to get around. South Green Bay Road, which connects to Douglas Avenue to the north and reaches into Milwaukee, is just about 5 miles west. When drivers need to connect to the rest of the country, Interstate 94 is 10 miles west and puts downtown Milwaukee a little more than 20 miles away from Racine. The nearest 24-hour emergency care facility, Ascension All Saints, is 3 miles west and can be reached in 10 minutes or less.First Fridays and Party on the Pavement
Riley says Downtown Racine is the most popular destination for annual events. First Fridays, she says, happen from June until December, and the city’s Holiday Parade is a big attraction in the winter. “Our biggest event of the year, though, is Party on the Pavement.” Featuring live music, local cuisine and a 5k run, this end-of-summer festival spans numerous blocks of Main Street and 6th Street and regularly attracts more than 15,000 people. There are also plenty of opportunities that bring neighbors together during the summer, with the Racine Harbor Market running bi-monthly from the end of May through the end of August, bringing together local vendors and musical performances. The winters bring the holiday parade and the city's tree lighting ceremony.Skating in Downtown Racine
The Main Street Walkway is a green space that runs a few blocks between Sam Johnson Parkway and 6th Street. The tree-lined thoroughfare features shaded benches and a fountain at one end where kids can run through the water. Pershing Park features athletic fields as well as the 18,000 square foot Pershing Skatepark. From in-line skaters, to skateboarders, to BMX bikers, there is space for all skill levels, including a dedicated beginner's area and a street course.Modern condos, early 20th century homes
New condo developments are increasingly popular at the north end of the neighborhood, where Root River meets Lake Michigan. Condos range in price from $200,000 to $500,000, with many developments overlooking the water. Toward the south end of the neighborhood, single-family Homes in Downtown Racine commonly date back to the early 1900s, and styles reflect the trends of the time. Architectural styles range from low-slung bungalows to ornate Victorian and Dutch-Colonial two-stories. Prices for single-family homes range from $75,000 to $175,000, depending on how much work a home may need.Walden III combines middle and high school education
Jefferson Lighthouse Elementary School earns a B-minus on Niche and offers kindergarten through fifth-grade classes. Walden III earns a B-plus.Along the shores of Lake Michigan
Sitting alongside Lake Michigan, Downtown Racine sees plenty of activity on the water. Private marinas, yacht clubs and the Pershing Park Boat Launch all offer water access, and the horizon is full of sails and small fishing boats in the summers. This is topped off by the week-long Salmon-a-rama fishing tournament in July. For those just wanting a peaceful panorama, the grassy Racine Overlook offers expansive views of the water.
