Smaller homes near a Racine shopping district
One part industrial and two parts residential, Garden City is a Racine neighborhood with smaller homes that sit near an abundance of amenities. Home prices are a big reason why Racine homebuyers move to Garden City, says Lyle Albro, sales director at Shorewest Realtors’ Racine Office. “It’s within ten minutes of the lakefront, it’s convenient to shopping and dining, and there’s a very popular bakery there.”
Sidewalks and RYDE Racine bus stops are plentiful
Sidewalks accompany most of Garden City’s streets, and RYDE Racine bus stops surround the neighborhood. Stops are located along Durand Avenue, Ohio Street, 21st Street and Lathrop Avenue. Just a few blocks north of Garden City, drivers can hop on 16th Street and head 2 miles east to reach Lake Michigan or less than a mile west to reach South Green Bay Road. For interstate access, drivers can head 6 miles west to Interstate 94, which makes downtown Milwaukee a 30-mile trip from Garden City.
Kringles at O & H Danish Bakery
Garden City is less than a mile east of the former Regency Mall site. Much of the mall has been torn down to be replaced with a larger grocery store, but Barnes and Noble, Target and other big-name stores remain, giving residents plenty of opportunity to shop. In addition to the larger stores, Albro says the area holds a few strip malls with smaller shops. One of the neighborhood's most well-known spots is the treat shop O & H Danish Bakery. “They have several locations throughout Racine,” Albro says. “They’re known for their Danish Kringle, which is an oval-shaped pastry filled with fruits, cheese or hundreds of other possible fillings.” When residents want to grab dinner out, they can head to the local Greek restaurant Dynasty or try the eclectic menu at Tino’s Carry Out, which features dishes like catfish and rib tips, gyros and double cheeseburgers. When home cooks need to stock up on groceries, they can head to Piggly Wiggly on Durand Avenue.

Covering 79 acres, Pritchard Park also offers residents a large selection of year-round amenities like hiking trails, a pond to fish and a children’s playground. Nearby, Pierce Woods Park provides an open green space and a pavilion for social gatherings. Small, ranch-style homes
Roughly a third of the neighborhood’s northern end is dedicated to industrial property, but the rest is primarily residential. Ranch-style homes are the predominant style in Garden City, but bungalows and cape cods pepper the landscape with occasional variety. Home sizes tend to be smaller, with the average size being 834 square feet, significantly below the national average of 1,933 square feet. While prices typically range from $100,000 to $269,000, the median home price is $190,000, up 9% from the previous year.

Party on the Pavement in Downtown Racine
Garden City isn’t home to any specific events, Albro says, but the neighborhood is close to Lake Michigan. “There’s always things going on along the beach and the shores of Lake Michigan,” he says. The neighborhood is also 3 miles from Downtown Racine, which hosts a full calendar of events year-round. First Fridays offers live music throughout Downtown Racine on the first Friday of each month from June until December. At the end of summer, Party on the Pavement shuts down city blocks across Downtown Racine and features live music, a 5k run and special deals from local shops and restaurants.
