A peaceful community enclave
Surrounded by three cemeteries, an award-winning school and the banks of the Root River, Kinzie Heights feels separated from the rest of Racine, though it’s less than 2 miles from downtown. “It’s really its own island,” says Lance Penniston, Realtor with First Weber Realtors in Racine. “It’s surrounded by huge cemeteries, so you know the neighborhood’s going to be quiet.”
Kinzie Avenue connects residents to the rest of the city
The tree-lined streets of Kinzie Heights come well-equipped with sidewalks, and RYDE Racine bus stops line Kinzie Avenue along the southern edge of the neighborhood. Still, Penniston says driving is almost a necessity for residents. Drivers can take Kinzie Avenue less than 2 miles east to reach Downtown Racine, or head west the same distance to reach South Green Bay Road. Interstate 94 is about 7 miles west, putting downtown Milwaukee 30 miles from the neighborhood.
Pick ‘N Save to the west
Just southwest of the neighborhood, there’s a collection of local shops and restaurants. DeRango’s the Pizza King is one of the area’s most popular pizza joints. Less than a block west of DeRango’s, Wilson’s Coffee and Tea offers fresh coffee and pastries. Heading east into Downtown Racine, residents can enjoy a few hours at the Racine Art Museum or enjoy local shops like Vintage and Modern Books on 6th Street. Kinzie Heights is a bit of a food desert, and Penniston says residents must travel outside the neighborhood for groceries. “There’s a Pick ‘N Save around Green Bay Road,” Penniston says. “Or everybody’s going down to Highway 20, around Village Center.”
Pick ‘N Save, the neighborhood’s closest grocery store, lies west on North Green Bay Road.
Downtown Racine holds local shops like Vintage and Modern Books.
