Immediate Lake Michigan access in this lakefront community
Lakecrest, an eastside neighborhood in Racine, has one defining feature: its lakeside views of Lake Michigan. “The only reason people live on Michigan Boulevard in this neighborhood is because of the lake,” says Kimberly Mann, a real estate agent with Russell Mann Real Estate. “Everyone in this community has access. Take your bike, or for those who need them, wheelchairs, and easily go down to the lake.”
The community is known for its mid-20th-century homes and newer constructions. While property taxes can be higher in this area, its proximity to Wind Point, home to the historic Wind Point Lighthouse and the Racine Zoo, adds to its appeal. “The neighborhoods that surround the lake, along with its beachfronts, are strictly residential—no commercial properties. It’s all about living next to the beautiful beach,” says Dori A. Panthofer, village clerk of North Bay.
Expensive lakeside properties vary by street
Most homes in this neighborhood were built in the 1950s and feature expansive driveways that provide lakeside views of Lake Michigan. Property prices, however, vary depending on the street where the home is located. “If you’re right on the water, your property taxes are substantially higher, especially if you live on Michigan [Boulevard] that rims the lake,” says Mann. “If you go one more street over, home prices and taxes dramatically drop.”
Homes on Michigan Boulevard range from $850,000 to $1.5 million, while homes on Chatham Avenue typically range from $300,000 to $500,000. Also, despite its proximity to Lake Michigan, residents do not have to worry about flooding. “The homes on the bluff are elevated well above the lake, providing natural protection from rising water levels,” says Jen Hoaglund, Realtor of Blackstone Realty Group.
