A small suburb surrounded by local parks, cemeteries
Maple Grove is a primarily residential neighborhood located between two cemeteries. Its local park, Maple Grove Park, sits at the center of the community, walkable for many residents. Residents who move into the neighborhood are eligible for tax incentives tied to home purchases under Racine’s Tax Increment District plan – also known as TIDs. Spring Street, the main thoroughfare, provides residents with direct access to Ascension All Saints, Racine’s primary general hospital. It’s also home to local restaurants, including Blueberry Hilltop Café, a breakfast spot that opened in late 2023, and other retail.

Homes fall under multiple Neighborhood Tax Increment Districts
Maple Grove’s neighborhood consists of early 1900s two-story bungalows and ranch-style single-family homes. Bungalows typically feature front porches, while ranch homes offer sizable front lawns and detached garages located behind the homes. On certain streets, such as Shelley Street, gas lamps sit in front of homes, adding a historic charm. Bungalows in the community typically range in price from $180,000 to $230,000, while ranch homes range from $100,000 to $250,000. Homes in this neighborhood may fall under one of two TIDs, part of a multi-million-dollar initiative to encourage residential repairs and homeowner incentives while providing for local infrastructure improvements. This reinvestment into the neighborhoods encourages upkeep and helps neighborhoods avoid deterioration through a grant program. While flooding is rare here, some areas in the northwest portion of the neighborhood see standing matter after heavy rains.

Offered during the summer, the program allows kids to play organized games, attend field trips, and take part in weekly events. “Our nine-week registered playground program comes with a one-time fee, and parents are required to sign their kids in and out,” says Jeanne Brenner, recreation supervisor for the City of Racine Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services.
Lockwood Park also offers recreational sports for all ages, including adult league baseball games on a field designed for baseball and softball. The park’s main grass area provides space for recreational soccer and youth football games. Settled between city-owned and Catholic cemeteries
Maple Grove is between two cemeteries: Graceland Cemetery, a city-owned municipality, and Old Holy Cross Cemetery, a Catholic cemetery managed by the Catholic Cemetery Association of Racine. “We are run by a municipality, so we serve any party interested in a burial regardless of denomination,” said Crystal Weime, cemetery manager of Graceland Cemetery. “We are less than a mile away from Old Holy Cross Cemetery, which is exclusively available to those who belong to the Catholic Church. As a result, proceedings and burials will vastly differ from how we operate.” Residents should be aware of potential traffic congestion caused by funeral processions at either site.
