Roosevelt is a residential neighborhood where half of the residents live in small homes and half live in apartments, including several complexes for seniors. About a quarter of Roosevelt is industrial. Homes that can be as small as under 1,000 square feet at prices under $200,000 make this an attractive neighborhood for first-time buyers. Its location, just 4 miles southwest of downtown Racine, allows residents to enjoy lakefront and city amenities without spending an outsized amount on housing. Kenosha is just 9 miles away, and Milwaukee is 30 miles away.
Attractive home prices, rare listings
Most homes here sell for between $150,000 and $240,000, but they rarely come up for sale. Deep and narrow ranch-style and raised ranch styles dominate the neighborhood's grid streets. An occasional Cape Cod or Colonial Revival-inspired home can be seen from time to time. Many driveways are wide enough to park a boat with standalone garages at the end of driveways behind the houses. Homes typically have some light landscaping along the front and sides. A lot of dead-ends keep traffic to a minimum. "Some people take really good care of their property, and others don't," says Ann Carbajal. A lifelong Racine resident and Realtor with Shorewest Realtors, Inc., Carbajal has been selling real estate in the area for six years. Carbajal says Roosevelt does not have an association to enforce rules about how often to cut the grass or what colors to paint a house.

New Woodman's Market to open on site of old Regency Mall
Roosevelt has several grocery shopping options and chain restaurants. Nearby supermarkets include Pick' n Save, Festival Foods and Piggly Wiggly. Restaurants include Texas Roadhouse, Red Lobster, Dynasty and Golden Needle. A mile away is O&H Danish Bakery, home of the world-famous Danish kringle pastry. Several big-box stores, including Target, Kohl's, Best Buy and Barnes & Noble, are within less than 2 miles. And the city is still growing its restaurant and retail scene. Carbajal says current developments aim to bring new business to the area. The new Woodman's Market, an employee-owned, Wisconsin-based chain grocery store, is scheduled to open in 2025 on the site of the former Regency Mall.

Expansive rec space at Hantschel Park and Pritchard Park
Hantschel Park is located in the center of the neighborhood and attracts visitors with its amenities, including a sandlot ball diamond, playground, playfield, shelter, historical exhibit, wetlands, restrooms and limited ADA accessibility. One mile to the south, Pritchard Park includes the SC Johnson Community Aquatic Center, a football field, open space and pickleball courts. "They've really taken good care of [Pritchard] Park," Carbajal says. During frigid Wisconsin months, folks can have fun and exercise indoors right in the neighborhood at spots like Castle Lanes bowling, which has daytime, weeknight and weekend leagues. The locally owned Star Roller Rink has a retro vibe, complete with a disco ball.
Hantschel Park is an 8-acre neighborhood park on the west side of Racine.
