Coastal living in School Section-Towerview
Steps away from downtown Racine and the Root River, School Section-Towerview is a coastal neighborhood on the western shores of Lake Michigan. The neighborhood features historic houses and pocket parks, giving the area a suburban character. With the waters so close by, residents can easily enjoy activities such as boating, fishing and surfing. For shopping and entertainment, staple restaurants and the city’s art scene in downtown are steps away. “The area around downtown feels like a small town,” says Rosa Stong, who is the founder of Becker Stong Real Estate Group and has over 10 years of work experience. “There is a beautiful marina with gorgeous restaurants and boutique commercial businesses, and they do lots of events by the water.”
Residential homes along Lake Michigan
Featuring gridded blocks and linear streets, the community has a mix of home styles, ranging from American Foursquare and workers cottage to Queen Anne and colonial-inspired houses. Fixer-uppers and houses in need of updates start at just under $100,000 and go up to around $150,000. Remodeled homes are usually between $160,000 and $350,000, with larger historic houses in Queen Anne and colonial styles near the water reaching $700,000. Yard sizes are on the modest side, and neighbors have small plots of lawn space for gardening. Multifamily properties go from $65,000 to $200,000, and condos built in the 1970s are around $150,000 to $200,000.
Water recreation is a way of life in Racine
Many waterfront parks, athletic facilities and beaches are along Lake Michigan's coastal shores. Samuel Myers Park is a popular birding spot, and people can take their pets to Carre-Hogle Park for quiet walks. “The lake is just so pretty, and many people come here to go sailing,” Stong says. “Once you go past the marina, there’s a little cove where the water is really calm. People anchor their sailboats there and jump into the water to swim. This is what we have here, and it’s really beautiful.” Other neighborhood parks, such as Roosevelt Park and West Park, have playgrounds or sports fields. Dr. John Bryant Community Center has an indoor gym with a basketball court. Just across the Root River, people can walk or bike along the 10-mile Lake Michigan Pathway and enjoy picturesque views of the water.
Shopping and dining in downtown Racine
Popular restaurants in the area include Lá Tapatia, a cantina with casual Mexican eats, and Wells Brothers, which first opened its doors in 1921 and is a staple pizza parlor in the city. Smaller convenience stores and markets such as Matranga's are all around the neighborhood. Piggly Wiggly, the area’s main grocery store, is about 3 miles west. Many big-box stores, such as Walmart, Target and The Home Depot, are several miles west along Route 31.

As a coastal city, Racine has many events by the river, including the music festival Racine HarborFest in June at Festival Park, and the Racine River Fest in August, which has dragon boat, rubber duck and cardboard boat races, as well as free sailboat excursions. “They also have a First Friday event,” Stong says. “The restaurants put chairs outside for outdoor dining, and people can walk along the harbor. It’s like a little fair.”
