Neighborhood homes were mostly built from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, featuring bungalows, American Foursquares, workers cottages, colonial-inspired and shotgun houses. Single-family properties usually sell from $70,000 to $120,000, and multifamily homes go between $65,000 and $180,000. Fixer-uppers are often below $100,000. Most houses have a small driveway, but it’s also common to see cars parked on the street. Neighbors have small yards with gardens or decks, and the tree-lined, narrow streets often have sidewalks.Outdoor recreation around the community
The neighborhood is home to one of the many community gardens operated by the nonprofit Racine Urban Garden Network. Residents can sign up for a garden plot to grow their own flowers or vegetables, and fees are donation based. Since 1917, the nine-hole Washington Park Golf Course has been open to the public. With the Root River and Lake Michigan’s western shores close by, people can enjoy boating, fishing and swimming.Restaurants and pubs in downtown Racine
Restaurants and small markets surround the community. For casual Mexican eats, Lá Tapatia has a small grocery store and serves street food options. Kabab and Grill is a buffet-style Middle Eastern restaurant. Festival Foods and Walmart are farther west along the same street, Washington Avenue. Residents can also head about 1 mile north to downtown and explore the city’s lively art and culinary scene. Staple establishments include Racine Heritage Museum, Racine Art Museum and Reefpoint Brew House, a local go-to pub serving beer and pub classics.Students are served by the Racine Unified School District
Prospective schools include Knapp Elementary School and the kindergarten-through-eighth grade Mitchell School, both of which have a C-minus grade from Niche. Mitchell's sixth- through eighth-grade students may enroll in business, technology and consumer education career academies. Case High School has an International Baccalaureate program, and Park High School offers business and public health education learning pathways. Both schools rate a B-minus.Events in downtown Racine
Although Uptown-the Junction doesn't have many events itself, downtown is full of things to do all year long. “They do lots of events by the water,” Stong says. “There’s jazz in the park, antique car shows and fishing contests.” The Racine River Fest, featuring dragon boat and cardboard boat races, and the music festival, Racine HarborFest, are some of the city’s most popular lakeside celebrations. The community also organizes events in downtown, including wine walks, pavement parties and First Fridays, a monthly street fair from May to December that celebrates the local community with food booths and live performances.Proximity to Milwaukee
Wisconsin highways 32 and 20 pass through the neighborhood, which is convenient for navigating to other coastal cities in the state. Interstate 94 is less than 10 miles west, and residents can take the interstate to access Milwaukee, which is approximately 30 miles away. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 20 miles north of the area, and Ascension All Saints Hospital - Spring Street is 3 miles away. The Belle Urban System services the city’s public transit, and bus stops are just west of the community along 16th Street.
