West Racine
Homes with a variety of styles
Many of West Racine’s homes were built in the early 1900s, but the neighborhood also has a collection of homes built around the 1950s and 60s. Because of their age, it’s common for them to be fully renovated or at least updated with modern amenities. Albro says the neighborhood has a great mix of architectural styles. “There are bungalows, Cape Cods and Dutch colonials. It’s a very stable area where the value has increased a lot,” Albro says. Prices range from $120,000 to $260,000. The median home price is $180,000, up 3% from the previous year.A dual language elementary school
Students can begin their educational journey at Fratt Elementary School, where they can attend pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and enroll in the school’s Spanish dual language program. Fratt earns a C on Niche. Mitchell School serves grades six through eight in this area, earning a C-minus. Park High School opened in 1928, making it one of Racine’s oldest high schools, and earns a B-minus.Easy access to the interstate
RYDE Racine bus stops line West Racine’s larger streets, like Washington Avenue and Lathrop Avenue. The neighborhood’s streets are lined with sidewalks, so residents can easily walk to bus stops and other areas. South Green Bay Road is less than half a mile west of the neighborhood, and Interstate 94 is 6 miles west. “It’s a fairly direct drive to the interstate to reach Milwaukee or Chicago,” Albro says.Biking trails, a community garden and a dog park
The County Bike Trail runs through the neighborhood's south end and extends south into Illinois, offering bikers and hikers miles of paved trail. Residents can access the County Bike Trail at the intersection of 16th Street and West Boulevard and other locations throughout the neighborhood. Washington Park Golf Course is a laid-back 9-hole course and one of the most popular public golf courses in Racine. The Root River Pathway is accessible on Washington Avenue and crosses the river to connect residents with Cedar Bend Park and Horlick Park. On 16th Street, Solbraa Park holds a baseball field, basketball court and playground. On Byrd Avenue, Hantschel Park offers a baseball field, a playground and a swing set. North Owen Davies Park holds a dog park and a community garden on West Boulevard. The shops of West Racine
“There’s a shopping area on Washington Avenue we call West Racine,” Albro says. “That business district is very active in promoting themselves.” Gold Bear Trading Company sells an extensive collection of Native American art, crafts and jewelry. Wilson’s Coffee and Tea roasts beans on-site to deliver fresh coffee made from beans sourced all over the world. DeRango The Pizza King is a popular dinner spot with residents looking for locally made pizza. Gordon Food Service Store sits less than half a mile west on South Green Bay Road.Annual events are held in downtown Racine
Downtown Racine is less than 3 miles from West Racine, so the city’s annual events are just a short distance away. Live music comes to various venues across the downtown area through First Fridays, which occurs on the first Friday of each month, from spring to early winter. Party on the Pavement draws more than 15,000 people downtown each year with live music and deals from local vendors. The Holiday Parade kicks off the holiday season and culminates in the Tree Lighting Ceremony at Monument Square.
