Wolffs Town's community is just blocks from the zoo and beach
Wolffs Town’s quiet residential streets create a suburban atmosphere a few blocks from major Racine attractions. Lake Michigan is just east of the neighborhood, and the Racine Zoo is a short walk away. Even with these citywide attractions so close by, the Wolffs Town community is still engaged and friendly. “When I was younger, we knew all our neighbors, but today, the dynamics are different,” says lifelong northern Racine resident and broker Anna Maria DeRango with DeRango Real Estate Services. “I spearhead a neighborhood rummage sale every year. I’ve been doing it for 22 years, and they all look forward to it. We’re selling hot dogs, we’re selling stuff out of the garage. It’s great comradery.”
Nearby Wind Point has a stunning lighthouse with a great view of Lake Michigan.

The beach, zoo and local community center
Lake Michigan is accessible at North Beach. “Our lakefront is amazing. It’s very serene,” DeRango says. The 50 acres of sand include Kid Cove Playground, a wooden playground designed to look like a pirate boat, plus a snack shack that sometimes offers live music. “The beaches are free, and my daughters play volleyball there on the sand,” DeRango says. Racine Zoo is also on the lakefront, featuring about 75 species, including tigers, giraffes and black rhinos. The County Bike Trail cuts through the northwestern side of Wolffs Town, starting at Layard Avenue and heading north along the train tracks. Just outside of the neighborhood, Cesar Chavez Community Center offers a baseball diamond and playground alongside indoor amenities like the basketball courts and weight room.

Walking to Racine's public schools
“Growing up on the north side was great because I was in walking distance of school,” DeRango says. In fact, school bus service mostly skips Wolffs Town because students live so close to school. Kids north of Melvin Avenue head to Jerstad-Agerholm School for kindergarten through eighth grade, while K-5 students south of Melvin Avenue start at Roosevelt Elementary School before joining the rest of the neighborhood at Jerstad-Agerholm. Both schools receive C-minus rankings from Niche. Horlick High School, rated C-plus, offers academy programs for culinary arts, health sciences and education.
