Multiple generations stay loyal to this northwest Racine community
Wustum Park is a northwest Racine neighborhood with multigenerational ties. Historically, it's one of two enclaves where Italian immigrants settled in Racine. "Many times these 1,200 to 1,500 square-foot homes had families of four, five or six who raised their kids, walked to Sacred Heart Church and went to school there," says Robin Polzin, a Racine native and Realtor with Shorewest Realtors. "I still find there are some original families who have lived there for 50 or 60 years." Today, a mix of longtime residents and new ones share the same neighborhood conveniences, including established family restaurants and several nearby schools.
Ranch and Minimal Traditional homes with original features
Polzin says affordable quality homes remain one of this neighborhood's biggest appeals. Wustum Park is a primarily residential area with ranch and Minimal Traditional dwellings, which some residents have held onto for decades. "You get into some of these other neighborhoods closer to the lake, closer to the city, and you're paying for the upgrades and the finishes other people have done," Polzin says. "In Wustum Park, you might go in there and still see the original floors; they still might have that avocado green fridge in the basement." Sidewalks and small front yards flank the neighborhood streets. Sale prices range from around $190,000 to $260,000.
