Olustee is a large, sparsely populated rural Florida community
Olustee is a sprawling but sparsely populated Baker County community in rural north-central Florida. Largely uninhabited, it is surrounded by the wooded landscape of the Osceola National Forest and offers a slow-paced, country lifestyle. The community was the site of Florida’s largest Civil War battle, and today it is home to Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park.
Most of the community's homes are near Ocean Pond
Housing is concentrated in the northwest corner near Ocean Pond and U.S. Highway 90. A mix of traditional frame houses, ranch-style designs and manufactured homes occupy spacious lots on streets shaded by mature trees. Homes along Ocean Pond feature private docks. A handful of homes is scattered in wooded areas on the community’s south side. The median sales price is just over $160,000. Flooding is not a factor in this inland location, although wind damage remains a risk during hurricane season, which runs from June through November.
Ocean Pond is the center of rural recreation
Ocean Pond is a small lake that offers plenty of rural recreation. The highlight is Olustee Beach, a popular spot for swimming and relaxing. Fishing and kayaking are popular activities as well, and several designated campgrounds are located along the lakeshore. Trailheads in and around the community offer access to hiking and horseback riding in the Osceola National Forest. Nearby dual sport trails provide fun for riders of motorcycles, ATVs and other off-road vehicles. Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park features a 1-mile trail with interpretive signs.
Shopping and dining options are concentrated in nearby Lake City
Rogers Sandwiches & More is a popular local restaurant and the only one in Olustee. It is conveniently located along U.S. 90 near most of the community’s homes. Dining and entertainment options are concentrated in Lake City about 12 miles away. The Publix-anchored Lake City Commons and Lake City Mall are the closest shopping centers.
Students attend four Baker County public schools
Students begin their public school pipeline at Baker County Pre-K/Kindergarten Center, which earns a B from Niche. From there, they attend Legacy Elementary School, which opened in 2021 and does not have a Niche rating; Baker County Middle School, also B-rated; and Baker County High, rated C-plus. The high school offers more than a dozen career academies in subjects as varied as agriculture and interior design.
Route 10 provides residents with access to the amenities of Lake City
U.S. 90, which runs through the heart of Olustee, provides quick access west to the amenities of Lake City, which include HCA Florida Lake City Hospital and Lake City VA Medical Center. The highway leads directly to Interstate 10 just east of the community. Jacksonville and its international airport are about an hour away via I-10. The community’s CAP Index score of 2-out-of-10 is below the national number.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
