Atlantic is a midcentury suburb with modern amenities
Just 6 miles north of downtown Raleigh, Atlantic is a suburban sprawl amid a big-city atmosphere. And despite its midcentury establishment, the neighborhood boasts an air of modernity. "It's an older neighborhood, so houses have lots of character," says Stephanie Anson, a Realtor with Northside Realty who has sold several homes in the area. "But there are also many renovations happening with new buyers." Locals can enjoy a recently updated playground at Brentwood Park or devour fare from culturally influenced restaurants along Capital Boulevard. Places for axe throwing, go-kart racing and roller skating are also within arm's reach for Atlantic residents.
Affordable homes line cul-de-sacs in Atlantic
Shaded by towering loblolly pine trees and dotted with speed bumps, Atlantic’s cul-de-sacs are home to brick-façade dwellings built throughout the 1960s. Split levels and ranch styles have three bedrooms and lot sizes ranging from 10,000 square feet to a quarter acre. “The neighborhood is selling really well right now because the prices are some of the most affordable in the city, considering how close you are to downtown,” says Anson. Homes with original finishes start at $250,000, and updated models can cost $400,000, a range less than a Raleigh home’s average $450,00 selling price. Complexes like Greenpark off Hoyle Drive or Pine Knoll along Greyhound Drive have two-to-three-bedroom townhouses built during the early 2000s selling for between $150,000 and $250,000.

Brentwood Park has updated equipment and Capital Boulevard is an entertainment mecca
Brentwood Park spans 19 acres off Vinson Court, and the green space underwent renovations in 2019, adding two futsal courts and a playground with rope climbing structures. By the end of 2024, a spray park and new picnic shelters will also be complete. In the meantime, visitors can shoot hoops on the basketball courts, hit a home run on the baseball diamond or access the paved, 1-mile-long Marsh Creek Trail. The 29-acre Green Road Park is another popular recreation hub in the neighborhood, featuring tennis courts and a sand volleyball complex. Its fitness and community center hosts daily Zumba classes and an after-school program. Readers can visit the Green Road Community Library, which offers monthly teen trivia nights, various craft workshops and family story times in Spanish or English.
Atlantic is also brimming with amusement hubs off Capital Boulevard, like Chuck E. Cheese or Crazy Axe, a recreational axe-throwing center. Locals can glide across the roller rink at United Skates of America, boasting a disco theme and a vintage arcade. For a twisty, quarter-mile go-kart track, an 18-hole miniature golf course and a laser tag arena, Adventure Landing is the place to go, and it’s open year-round.

Atlantic is a part of the Wake County Public School System
Children here can attend Brentwood Elementary, graded a B by Niche, then continue to B-plus-rated Centennial Middle. Lastly, they may go to B-minus-graded Southeast Raleigh High, where the University Connections magnet program offers pathways for those interested in design, arts or engineering. The school is also one of three in the city to earn the North Carolina STEM School of Distinction Recognition.

Atlantic is brimming with culturally influenced eateries
Locals can start their morning with a watermelon-flavored agua fresca or a latte drizzled in dulce de leche syrup at La Horchateria on New Hope Church Road. Capital Boulevard is also home to numerous Latin-influenced eateries, including Tacos Y Mariscos Vallarta, a colorful locale offering authentic Mexican meals, live music and karaoke nights. On the same thoroughfare, Pho Far East is known for Vietnamese bites and its namesake soup, made with beef, pork or shrimp. International food stores like Supermercado Latino or the Oriental Store of Raleigh are sprinkled across Atlantic, but Food Lion on Capital Boulevard is the neighborhood’s chain option. Stores like Sam’s Club, PetSmart and Lowe’s Home Improvement are immediately north of Atlantic in the Capital Crossing shopping center.

Locals have a short drive to downtown Raleigh
While some residential streets in Atlantic have sidewalks, the neighborhood is primarily convenient for drivers. A less than 6-mile drive south on Capital Boulevard leads to downtown Raleigh. The Duke Raleigh Hospital is 2 miles west, and Raleigh-Durham International Airport is 18 miles in the same direction. Bus riders will find numerous Go Raleigh stops along New Hope Church Road in the neighborhood’s northern region.
