Durant offers suburban living with a nature preserve and shopping

Just outside Raleigh’s Interstate 540 loop, Durant is a suburban blend of HOA communities, protected green space and retail amenities. Neighborhoods like Durant Trails and Durant Trace anchor the residential landscape, and their tree-lined streets meet the leafy canopy of Durant Nature Preserve and the convenience of nearby shopping centers. “Durant has a few things that are attractive,” says Paul Corsa, Realtor with Cambridge & Assoc. R.E. Group. “It’s super walkable; you’ll see kids and people walking the dog along the sidewalks. You can get a single-family with a decent sized yard below $600,000, and of course the nature park is awesome. Residents also have easy access to 540, which makes it easy to get to Research Triangle Park.” About 10 miles north of downtown, Durant presents a snapshot of Raleigh’s rapidly evolving setting, where long-time homeowners and newcomers alike can find a balance between quiet living and modern benefits.

Colonial Revivals and townhomes define the housing landscape

Durant offers a mix of residential and commercial spaces, but housing dominates. And despite single-family homes making up less than half of the community’s landscape, over 70% of Durant residents are homeowners. Many homes, especially in the prominent Durant Trails community, are Colonial Revival styles built during the 1980s and range in price from $325,000 to about $715,000. Durant Trails residents pay a monthly HOA fee that hovers between $12 and $40, and benefit from amenities like a clubhouse, swimming pool, pickleball courts and a calendar of social events ranging from yard sales and movie nights to seasonal gatherings like an Easter Egg Hunt and a Fall Festival. “There’s access to the nature preserve right next to the pool,” Corsa says. “The homes around the preserve have larger lots than the newer builds, which is a big draw.” Buyers can also find townhomes, including in Durant Towns, that start around $285,000 and climb to about $440,000, with typical monthly HOA fees of around $150.

Family-friendly Durant Nature Preserve provides trails and fishing

Durant Nature Preserve is the heart of Durant’s recreational offerings, with nearly 240-acres of green space. The park features wooded hiking trails, a fishing lake and spots for wildlife observation of animals like turtles and birds. Residents can also benefit from the playground and sand volleyball court, as well as pavilions for events. Hiking trails connect the preserve directly to neighborhoods like Durant Trails, allowing locals to walk from their homes into a forested adventure. “It’s a very family-friendly, little nature escape right there in suburbia,” Corsa says.

Shopping centers with grocers and eats live on Falls of Neuse Road

The west side of Durant, especially along Falls of Neuse Road, serves as a hub for retail and dining options that cater to everyday needs and a variety of tastes. Falls Pointe Shopping Center anchors the area with conveniences like Harris Teeter, Kohl’s and several fast-food chains. Just south, another plaza features Sprout’s Farmers Market along with a mix of storefronts and restaurants. Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar is known for its huge burgers and hand-cut fries, City Barbeque offers counter-service platters, and Yaba is a Mediterranean option. Falls River Town Center is another retail area on the north side that includes Food Lion, medical clinics and a combination of chain and local restaurants. “People enjoy having multiple grocery store options,” Corsa says. “And they just opened up a little speakeasy called The Dry Cleaners,” he adds, referring to the establishment just south on Falls of Neuse Road. For general medical care, WakeMed North Hospital offers full service and an ER just north on Durant’s north edge.

Wake County Schools serve learners, including Millbrook Magnet High

Students are part of the highly sought after Wake County Schools district, which receives an A rating from Niche. Learners can begin at Durant Road Elementary School and Durant Road Middle School, both of which hold a B-plus. Students can then advance to Millbrook Magnet High School, which has an A-minus and offers International Baccalaureate programs for all grade levels. All ninth and 10th graders are part of the IB Middle Years Programme, and eligible 11th and 12th grade students can complete the IB Diploma Programme.

For graduates looking to continue their studies locally, North Carolina State University is located 10 miles south. In addition to having a strong sports following, NC State is a public research university that attracts students interested in STEM-related fields.

Interstate 540 connects commuters to the airport and the RTP

Getting around Durant is manageable via a network of major roads and transit options. Interstate 540 runs along the south side, providing direct access to Raleigh-Durham International Airport just 15 miles west and Research Triangle Park about 5 miles past there. “They’re expanding 540 on the east side by maybe 2029,” Corsa adds, “which will make it easier to get to the beach on the weekends.” For those without a vehicle, Durant features some bike lanes, and Route 25L of the GoRaleigh public bus system makes stops along Durant Road.
