Forestville is an ideal location for those who want a suburban escape from the bustling city of Raleigh, without being completely insulated from the natural environment around them. Trails, rivers, creeks and lakes give the area a distinct outdoorsy vibe, while more than 10 unique subdivisions offer idyllic living for residents.
Within the subdivisions, visitors may get the sense that they’ve been transported to a scene in a family sitcom on television: neatly laid-out streets, fresh-concrete sidewalks, matching mailboxes, and SUVs parked in most driveways. But the community has an interest in getting their hands dirty.
“The community that we’re surrounded with is absolutely wonderful and super supportive,” says Gabriel Adams, owner of Half-A-Barn Farms on Mitchell Road at the northeast edge of the neighborhood. Adams and his wife started the farm in 2017 as a personal project and later expanded into a business. “People started hiring us almost immediately to teach them to grow.”

Distinct subdivisions with their own character
The neighborhood is full of different subdivisions and named communities, each with a distinctive character. Areas like Neuse Crossing or Heron Park offer a more mature development, with larger yards and tree cover to provide privacy between homes, while Subdivisions like Massey Preserve or 5401 North offer newer construction with smaller yards and much closer neighbors. Most homes here are considered New Traditional, a building style that mixes elements from older architectural styles and modern Millennium designs. There are also town house developments for a more dense and urban-feeling atmosphere. Town houses generally sell for around $350,000, while freestanding homes are generally listed for $350,000 to $500,000 for new construction.

River recreation
The Neuse River cuts through Forestville neighborhood and offers myriad opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Neuse River Trail runs for more than 25 miles through Wake County and neighboring areas. The paved trail follows the path of the Neuse River and connects to other greenways, with plenty of access from nearby neighborhood trails and trailheads throughout the western side of Forestville. For direct access, the 25-acre River Bend Park features a launch for kayaks and canoes as well as a playground.
The trails, greenways and boating opportunities are a significant draw to the area, according to Adams. “There’s a lot of interest – I mean, who doesn’t like outside? Weirdos, that’s who.”

Connect to Raleigh and Wake County
Commuters can take Highway 401 directly into Raleigh or further north to the rest of Wake County. The neighborhood also borders Interstate 540, which arcs around Raleigh’s northern side, making for easy access to the surrounding area, including Research Triangle Park. However, the desirability of the area is making it more difficult to get around. “One thing that’s kind of a bummer is that since it’s so nice, it’s developed so fast, and traffic is abysmal now,” Adams said. Residents have access to two hospitals within ten miles: Duke Raleigh Hospital, located 10 miles southwest of the neighborhood, and WakeMed North Hospital, also 10 miles away to the northwest.
