Long Lake
Contemporary Craftsman homes and townhouses
The quiet residential streets of Long Lake are lined with a mix of contemporary Craftsman-style single-family homes and townhouses perched on properties with well-maintained front lawns and paved driveways. Homes sport similar brick-and-vinyl exteriors and front-facing gables that are often overshadowed by mature oak trees along the neighborhood’s cul-de-sacs and roundabouts. Single-family properties range from approximately $550,000 to $850,000, while townhouses typically sell between $300,000 and $500,000. In addition to paved driveways, most properties also have attached one or two-car garages.Students zoned for Wake County Schools
Long Lake is zoned for the Wake County Schools district, which serves most of Raleigh and receives an overall A rating from Niche. Hillburn Academy is a combined elementary and intermediate school that receives an A-minus rating and serves pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students. The A-rated Leesville Road Middle serves grades six through eight, while secondary students can attend Leesville Road High School, an A-minus-rated institution. In 2025, Leesville Road High was ranked No. 12 on Niche’s “Best High Schools for Athletes in North Carolina” list. All three schools have traditional nine-month school-year calendars, which is not always standard for the vast and complex Wake County Schools system.Community clubhouse amenities and the nearby Umstead Park
In addition to proximity to the sprawling William B. Umstead State Park area, residents of Long Lake can find other outdoor spots right outside their front door. “Long Lake surrounds Dunaway Pond, a nice little neighborhood water area,” Pitney says. “There’s also a standard community clubhouse on the water with some nice recreational amenities.” At the clubhouse, residents have access to an outdoor swimming pool, a playground and two well-maintained tennis courts bordered by shady hedges. William B. Umstead State Park – which sits opposite the neighborhood across Glenwood Avenue – covers nearly 5,600 acres of land and is full of hiking trails that circumnavigate lakes and lush, dense forests with opportunities for biking, wildlife observation, picnicking and camping. The park’s diverse ecosystems and massive space allow for an immersive, natural escape despite its proximity to residential neighborhoods like Long Lake.Bordering shopping centers along Glenwood Avenue
Shopping centers border either side of Long Lake. If residents turn left out of the neighborhood onto Glenwood Avenue, they’ll quickly come across an outdoor shopping area with big box retailers like Target and Lowe’s, as well as a Goodwill store and Cinemark Bistro Raleigh, an upscale movie theater with food service. This shopping area is also home to the Lynwood Grill and Brewing Company, a casual pub-style eatery with a roof deck, outdoor seating and live music. If residents leaving Long Lake make a right turn onto Glenwood Avenue, they’ll quickly arrive at another shopping plaza with fast-food restaurants like Bojangles and Dunkin’, which sit next to a furniture store and several autobody shops. “One of the most popular restaurants in the area is Angus Barn, a steakhouse not more than a few miles from Long Lake,” Pitney says. Decked out with rustic yet elegant interior designs and serving award-winning surf-and-turf dishes, Angus Barn is a staple of the Raleigh area.Getting around the northwestern Raleigh metro
Glenwood Avenue – or U.S. Route 70 – is a main artery bordering Long Lake that runs directly toward the Interstate 440 corridor and the downtown Raleigh area, 10 miles away. “Glenwood Avenue is a major Raleigh thoroughfare – it’s been around forever,” Pitney says. In the opposite direction, Glenwood Avenue merges with Interstate 540, an even larger beltway that envelopes I-440 and the greater northern Raleigh metro. Near the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and I-540 is the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, which sits a few miles from the neighborhood. Despite being close to the neighborhood, residents typically aren’t subjected to airplane noise. Long Lake is a car-dependent community and there aren’t many other transit options in the area outside of app-based rideshare services like Uber and Lyft.
