Southeast Raleigh is a suburban spot with natural appeal

Just 6 miles from the city’s downtown area, Southeast Raleigh is a region where suburban amenities combine with natural seclusion. The area’s rolling, forested terrain makes it popular for hiking the Neuse River Trail, and residents will find ample chain restaurants and retailers sprinkled about. “This is the part of Raleigh that you go through right before you enter the more rural countryside,” says Caren Fried, a Realtor with Keller William Preferred Realty who has sold several homes in the area. “It’s made up of older subdivisions and neighborhoods still in development, so there’s a ton of housing variety.”

Southeast Raleigh is comprised of several subdivisions with exclusive amenities

From single-family dwellings to townhouse complexes, subdivisions in Southeast Raleigh are brimming with properties built from the late 1990s and beyond. In the north, The Village Lakes community is filled with four-bedroom New Traditional homes, and residents have access to tennis courts, a community pool and a private fishing pier. Old River Ridge in the southern region has cul-de-sacs dotted with French-eclectic homes and modern Cape Cod cottages on 1-acre lots. Wide sidewalks here make it easy for locals to walk or golf cart to the 18-hole River Ridge Golf Club. Single-family homes in Southeast Raleigh can cost anywhere between $250,000 and $600,000, a range in the same ballpark as a Raleigh home’s average $450,000 selling price. In complexes like Olde Town off Rock Quarry Road, three-bedroom townhouses constructed within the last five years range from $350,000 to $450,000.

Hiking along the Neuse River or running around a Carolina Panthers-sponsored park

As a former third-generation family farm, the 59-acre Kellam-Wyatt Farm Park Wildlife Refuge along Rogers Lane is a wooded oasis amid this residential enclave. While visitors can currently hike the parcel, the Wake County Parks & Recreation Department is set to build a community garden and an apple orchard here by the end of 2024. Anderson Point Park is another popular green space in the area, offering plenty of open space, a playground and access to the 27-mile Neuse River Trail in its southernmost region. “This is a huge trail system with different path connections to the downtown area,” says Fried. “It’s super popular for biking, but there are also places along the way to launch a canoe or stop and fish.” From an antebellum plantation to tenant farmland, Historic Oak View County Park on Carya Drive has a storied past, now depicted through guided, educational tours. A fitness room and two gymnasiums are available at the Barwell Road Community Center. It also has an outdoor playground sponsored by the Carolina Panthers NFL team with a turf 40-yard dash and rope climbing structures.

Southeast Raleigh students are in the Wake County Public School System

Children here can attend Rogers Lane Elementary, which receives a C-plus grade from Niche. Then, they can continue to River Bend Middle and Southeast Raleigh High, both rated a B-minus. The high school has a University Connections magnet program offering design, arts or engineering pathways. The school is also one of three in the city to earn the North Carolina STEM School of Distinction Recognition.

Chain grocery stores and locally owned eateries in Edgewater Plaza

Residents have several grocery shopping options with an Aldi, Walmart Supercenter and Food Lion in Southeast Raleigh’s northern region. Places like Starbucks, Dairy Queen Grill & Chill and Bojangles make picking up fast food easily accessible. Other nationally known commercial options like Macy’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods are only 9 miles north in Triangle Town Center. Local restaurants in Southeast Raleigh include Overtime Sports Pub in Edgewater Plaza, where patrons can sip a brew and devour chicken wings while watching a North Carolina State University football game. Sopranos Grill in the same shopping center offers an upscale setting, an extensive wine list and Italian classics, like thin-crust pizza and various veal dishes.

Southeast Boise boasts proximity to Interstate 440

While sidewalks and wide streets make walking to amenities within subdivisions easy, Southeast Raleigh is car-dependent. Luckily, Interstate 440 spans the area’s northern part. The WakeMed Raleigh Campus is 4 miles west via the highway, and downtown Raleigh is 6 miles away in the same direction. Following the thoroughfare for 20 miles leads to the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Bus riders will also find numerous Go Raleigh stops sprinkled across the area.
