Chestnut Ridge is a New York village with a rural vibe
Chestnut Ridge is a village in the town of Ramapo, on the border of New York and New Jersey. Home to just over 15,000 people, it is part of Rockland County, which offers job opportunities in healthcare and technology. Synagogues and houses of worship are also notable features of the community. The county has the largest Jewish population percentage of any county in the United States. Communal spaces and programs are offered through Duryea Farm of the Fellowship Community and several day camps.

Chestnut Ridge Gardens Condominiums is a 55-plus community where condos start around $228,000, but condos and townhouses in other areas can go for over $1 million. Split-level and ranch-style homes sit next to each other in leafy subdivisions, while larger $1,000,000 estates tend to sit spaced out on larger lots. Houses stay on the market for an average of 60 days, longer than the national average of 45 days. In the last year, a total of 58 homes sold.
Playing pickleball at Children's Park
Children's Park features sports courts, including pickleball and handball, as well as a baseball field and playground. The walking trail provides a scenic trek that loops around a pond, and meanders through a forested area with winding streams. Fishing and wildlife watching are favorite pastimes, as the pond is home to ducks, turtles and a few fish species. Resting benches and rose beds fill the small green space of Chestnut Ridge Garden.
A suburban area with few restaurants
While Chestnut Ridge is primarily a suburban area, it does have a few restaurants along Chestnut Ridge Road, including a kosher steakhouse. In addition to a cafe and bar, There’s an organic food co-op. For more options, shoppers and diners can travel south to Montvale or north to Spring Valley for grocery stores and larger retailers.
Green Meadow Waldorf School earns an A rating
Chestnut Ridge is part of the East Ramapo Central School District, which earns an overall Niche score of C-minus. Students are zoned for C-rated Margetts Elementary or C-minus-rated Fleetwood Elementary for kindergarten through third grade. Fourth through sixth graders can then attend Eldorado Elementary and graduate to Chestnut Ridge Middle for grades 7 and 8. Both schools earn a C-minus. Spring Valley High School has a C-plus rating. Green Meadow Waldorf School is an A-rated private option for kindergarten through Grade 12.
Commuting between Rockland County and New York City
The village is primarily car-dependent, but residents can drive a few miles to the Spring Valley or Montvale commuter stations. Rockland Coaches provides bus transportation between Rockland County and New York City. The Garden State Parkway connector is a toll road that runs through Chestnut Ridge and connects to the New York State Thruway, which spans nearly 570 miles throughout the state. On the Garden State Parkway North, the trip to Newark Liberty International Airport will take about 37 miles or 47 minutes.
