From midcentury Cape Cods to modern split-levels
Along with renovations to downtown, homebuyers will see that many of the single-owner homes went through interior renovations in the mid-2010s. Of interest to buyers is the fact that not all of the housing stock dates from the same era, giving plenty of styles to choose from. First, there are modest homes from Spring Valley’s midcentury heyday, including red brick Cape Cods with four bedrooms that sprawl over 1,300 square feet. Housing stock such as this reflects a denser approach that Spring Valley took towards neighborhood development, so it's not uncommon to see just a small ornamental strip of lawn out front or short driveways with no garage. But there are also split-level homes from the 1980s situated on curving streets with cul-de-sacs and mature shade trees and driveways leading to attached garages. Generally, home prices are in the $700,000s. For example, a four-bedroom Colonial from the 1970s, featuring a finished basement and mixed materials on the facade, will go for $750,000. But for the same price, homebuyers can find a five-bedroom split-level home from 1993, renovated in 2023, and featuring a quarter acre fenced lot.A centrally located park and pond
Spring Valley Parks & Rec is the neighborhood's sole green space, but it is extensive and centrally located. Tennis courts, soccer fields, a playground and a swimming pool are some of the athletic amenities. A duck pond offers quiet contemplation for strollers, and there are benches with tables for those who prefer to linger awhile. Bear Mountain is 18 miles north, an area that has been host to famous historic figures throughout the years, including several presidents. Hiking, swimming and fishing are some of the popular outdoor activities pursued there.Chestnut Ridge is an IB school
Elmwood Elementary enrolls nearly 600 students in kindergarten through sixth grade, and maintains a 16-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Niche gives the school a B-plus in the diversity category. Chestnut Ridge Middle has over 650 students attending, with a student-teacher ratio of 13-to-1. It, too, earned a B-plus in the diversity category from Niche. Chestnut Ridge is an International Baccalaureate school. Spring Valley High is located near Central Avenue, flanked by small businesses populating Kennedy Mall. The school enrolls around 1,300 students but still maintains a 12-to-1 student-teacher ratio, helping it to earn a B-minus from Niche in the teachers category. Residents also have access to the Finkelstein Memorial Library, a multi-story building with a slightly modernist look.Amenities along Central Avenue
Central Avenue is one of the main thoroughfares for Spring Valley, and like its name suggets, it runs through the center of town. Along this east-west passage, residents will find everything from eateries to educational facilities, like the high school and public library. Just north of the avenue is the Spring Valley commuter rail station. Interstate 287 runs along the south side, and residents can connect with it to kick off their 35-mile trek into Manhattan.Sushi and pastries at Evergreen Kosher Market
Featuring a strong Caribbean and Hispanic population, Spring Valley’s diversity is also apparent in its variety of restaurant options. For big servings, residents visit Island Spice. Jerk chicken, plantains and spicy beef patties are some of the Jamaican specialties to be found here. When it's time for some home cooking, Food Fair is nearby – an extensive supermarket offering almost any ingredient one might need. On the west end there’s Evergreen Kosher Market, another large grocery store with a popular bakery and a sushi bar.
