Hundred-year-old trees bedeck the quiet village of Wesley Hills, offering privacy to those fortunate enough to call this Rockland County neighborhood home. “You can raise your children in a scenic, countrylike area, away from the bustle of New York City,” says Charnie Guttmann, a Realtor at eRealty Advisors, Inc with six years of experience in the area. Forty miles north of the city, this woodsy suburb comes alive in autumn when the green foliage changes to shades of maroon and burnt orange.

“The properties in Wesley Hills are spread out, and the Mahwah River flows through the neighborhood, making it a really peaceful and wonderful place to live,” says Naomi Streicher, a Q Home Sales Realtor and lifetime local. You can find 2,000- to 3,500-square-foot midcentury modern, colonial revival and split-level ranch homes with up to an acre of land, some nestled in cul-de-sacs, for $725,000 to $900,000. Larger 2,300- to 5,000-square-foot split-level ranch homes, contemporary builds and colonial revivals with over an acre of property, back patios and even outdoor pools are in the $1 million to $2.5 million price range. Residential homes in this area have both roomy interiors and spacious landscapes, with multiple car garages and driveways.

The East Ramapo Central School District serves students living in Wesley Hills. Younger students can benefit from a 16:1 student-to-teacher ratio at Lime Kiln Elementary School before moving up to Pomona Middle School, where they’ll receive an even better 11:1 ratio. Older learners can attend Ramapo High School, which receives a B-minus grade on Niche. Also in the Wesley Hills neighborhood is Bnos Sarah of Monsey, a private all-girls Jewish school that includes pre-kindergarten through fourth grade.

Toward the center of Wesley Hills is Willow Tree Town Park, where locals can stroll or bike the paved path along the lake while admiring the geese and treescapes. Orchard Hills Park is in the southern part of the village, where kids can run around the playground while families practice baseball or work on their tennis swing, and dog walkers can get lost in the wooded trail. To the west, on the other side of US Route 202, campers or one-day visitors from all over come to Harriman State Park. With several hiking trails and lakes dispersed throughout the park’s forest and views of the distant Ramapo Mountains, it attracts outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.

Neighborhood locals know that the shops at the Wesley Kosher Supermarket plaza on the east side are where to go. “All the storefronts help each other and the community. They go to Esther Klein at Laced shoe store for the best shoes in the world, or Yehoshua Werth at The Grapevine for the right wine pairing,” says Streicher. For dining, there’s 306 Southern Barbeque which makes great smoked meats, Al Di La Pizza and Italian food and Hava Java coffee shop. “Also in the shopping center are doctor’s offices, a clothing boutique, a barber shop, a toy store and a bookstore,” adds Streicher. There are several Orthodox Jewish synagogues and kosher markets around Wesley Hills. For all other grocery shopping, there are a few ShopRites in a five to ten mile radius.

US Route 202 runs along the western edge of Wesley Hills, and Interstate 287 runs along the south. “Good Samaritan Hospital is only fifteen minutes away on the other side of 287, and a mile from there is the Suffern train station,” Streicher notes. If you hop on Palisades Interstate Parkway to the east and drive for an hour, you’ll land in the heart of New York City. But as Guttmann says: “People come to Wesley Hills to get away from the hubbub of the city, to live in a seclusive, picturesque town.”
